Briefly:
Visvakarma crafted two bows: Saranga and Pinaka. He gave the first to Visnu and the second to Siva.
One day the Devas wanted to establish who was more powerful between Visnu and Siva. Lord Visnu simply uttered “Om”, Pinaka was deprived of power and everyone in the universe swooned. So it was clear who was superior.
In due course of the time Siva gave Pinaka to Devaratha, an ancestor of Janaka.
Sri Ramacandra, an avatara of Visnu, broke the bow to confirm that Visnu is superior to all the Devas and even of Siva.
