Shortly after the arrival of Pandu’s sons, Vyasa arrived and was received with full honors in the city of the Kurus. The following day the sage wanted to speak to his mother.
“Gloomy days are approaching,” he said. “It will be a time when truth will be temporarily covered by ungodliness and falsehood. Much blood and tears from mothers, wives, children, friends, and relatives will flow over these lands. It will not be long before there is no one in this world who doesn’t have someone to cry for.”
Satyavati was alarmed by her son’s words.
“What do you say? What will happen, and who will have to cry for their loved ones?”
“Dhritarastra’s sons are evil, and because of their wickedness, the entire lineage of the Kshatriyas of the earth will perish in a terrible war. There is nothing that can be done to avoid it, as Dhritarastra refused to follow Vidura’s advice at the time of Duryodhana’s birth. This war is willed by the Devas and by the Supreme Lord Himself. Soon, much pain will flow like a curse over all of Bharata-varsha.”
Satyavati knew that Vyasa’s words could not be proven wrong, so, not wanting to witness those catastrophic events, she announced that she wanted to retire to a meditative life in the forest. Ambika and Ambalika wanted to follow her.
