Question

Dear Guru Maharaja
Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to You and Srila Prabhupada

Can You please explain to me why the chapter titled…a description of jambudvipa, why is it necessary to read?

In my humble opinion, it seems like this chapter is just describing geographical features. I do not see how this chapter is important for spiritual life.

Can You please tell me the reason why we need to read this chapter? Thank You

Your servant

Answer

Hare Krishna

If something is in Srimad-Bhagavatam it is certainly important because the great Vedic sages had no time to waste writing things that are useless.
If so, we should ask ourselves why it was created. It is the creation of the Lord, so we need and want to know.
However, comparatively speaking, one can return to Krishna by chanting Hare Krishna without knowing where Jambudvipa is or how it is divided.

Some knowledge is not needed by everyone. There are things that are needed by someone and not by others.
For example, some complicated mathematical problems are important for university students and scientists but they are not useful for a boy who starts school now, nor for a young man of 18 and probably will never be used by most people.
But a Brahmana is not such if he does not study and does not feel attraction to the knowledge contained in the Vedas and its corollaries, such as the Puranas and Itihasas, which concern both the spiritual world and the material world.
