Ravana Goes to Maricha

Ravana thought for a long time about what had happened and decided to go see Maricha for advice. He trusted Maricha a lot, and when there were emergency situations, he always went to him. Maricha was the son of Tataka, the same one who had disturbed Visvamitra’s sacrifices. As it can be remembered, in the course of the fight he had been thrown many miles away by Rama’s weapon. Since that day the Raksasa had converted to live a more virtuous life and had become an ascetic in the forest.

Ravana told him the whole story, and then asked him what he thought of the idea of kidnapping Sita. Maricha didn’t seem enthusiastic about the project at all.

“I’ve already had a chance to meet Rama in combat,” Maricha said, “and the advice I can give you is this: don’t bother him for any reason because when he’s angry he can destroy the whole world with all the creatures that are there. This is serious. Leave him alone, and also his wife and brother. You have everything you could wish for in life. Don’t spoil it out of pride. Return quietly to Lanka and enjoy life in the company of your queens and faithful friends. I repeat, don’t bother Rama.”

Maricha had a strong control over Ravana, who became convinced that this was the best he could do and returned to Lanka.
