The Concerns Of the Devas

In the celestial planets, those worlds where life is devoid of the troubles that ours is full of, there was much concern at that time. Serious problems haunted their long and fortunate existence. Coinciding with the performance of Dasaratha’s sacrifice, Brahma received the visit of the principal Devas. They looked worried, almost anxious. It was evident that a serious problem was plaguing them, and that they were coming to ask their father for help. One of the Devas explained:

“Now, there is no longer any limit to the abuses that the terrible Raksasa Ravana is inflicting on all humanity. Kingdoms have been destroyed, cities razed to the ground, cows and sages killed, women kidnapped and raped. And much more. We can do nothing against the power of that evil being, whom you made invincible. Please, intervene and restore peace and serenity.”

“You know as well as I do,” replied Brahma, “that I blessed Ravana to be virtually invulnerable, truly invincible. He cannot be killed by anyone. This is therefore a serious problem on which I have already pondered for a long time, but I have not yet been able to find a solution. Only a human being could kill him, but there is no such powerful man. And none of us Devas can do anything against him. But a solution must be found. The emergency is of the utmost gravity. I have decided to turn to Vishnu, the Supreme Lord. I’m sure he’ll help us end this nightmare.”

Brahma closed himself in deep meditation: he had such a solemn and imperturbable aspect that it seemed that nothing could shake him. Not long after, Vishnu appeared.

“I know how much harassment you are undergoing from the evil Raksasa. Just to put an end to his misdeeds, I, divided into four personalities, will appear as children of Dasaratha. In this way, I will end Ravana’s wretched career.”

As soon as Vishnu finished speaking, a celestial figure emerged from the fire of sacrifice that burned in Ayodhya and spoke, addressing the king.
