The concepts of pure devotional service, concerning raganuga-bhakti, have been treated by Vaisnava acarya such as Rupa Gosvami in Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu and Visvanatha Cakravarti in Madhurya Kadambini and Raga-vartma-candrika. Srila Bhaktivinode, following in their footsteps, explains in Bhajana-rahasya, the details concerning chanting and outlines the practice of raganuga-bhakti according to the instructions given by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in the Siksastaka. This book therefore is like a torch that aids progress on the path of devotion, in line with Rupa Gosvami and his followers.
Krishna explains to Brahma, in the Catuh-sloki Bhagavatam, that the confidential matter, the sa-rahasya, must be realized by the method of devotional service:
sri-bhagavan uvaca
jnanam parama-guhyam
me yad vijnana-samanvitam
sarahasyam tad-agam
ca grhana gaditam maya
The Personality of God said: the knowledge concerning Me, as described in the scriptures, is very intimate and must be realized in conjunction with the devotional service. The objects necessary for this practice are described by Me. Adopt it very carefully. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.9.31)
