Rama and Laksmana Understand the Deception

What did Rama do? By then, he had fully understood the vile deception and was concerned that his brother might be fooled by Maricha’s false cries, leaving Sita imprudently alone. As he quickly went back in his foodsteps, he saw all around signs foreshadowing a tragedy. When on the way he met his brother who was running equally frantically, his fears became an agonizing reality.

“Laksmana, what are you doing here?” he shouted at him. “I told you not to leave Sita alone!”

Laksmana caught his breath and told him what happened when Sita heard the screams, and reassured him that he had left her protected inside a magic circle. He wanted to reassure Rama even if it were momentarily as he also knew what would happen if Sita were deceived and taken out of the circle. Both desperate, they ran with what strength they had in their legs. When they arrived at the cabin, they found it desolately empty and around there were clear signs of struggle. By this point, their darkest fears had become a desperate reality: Sita had been kidnapped, or perhaps even killed.

The two brothers eagerly searched everywhere: in the creek, in the woods, in the clearings, in the favorite places where Sita often went. But very soon they lost their optimism; Sita had been kidnapped by the Rakshasas.

Rama was in shock; he could no longer keep his mind under control. His eyes wandered lightly everywhere, hoping to see his beloved.

“My dear Sita,” he groaned. “Where are you now?” “Who knows what evil being have kidnapped you. And who knows if you are still alive”, he said sorrowful.

All the feelings of suffering for the separation from his partner were unleashed in his heart.

«How will I manage now without her smile which, like the light, illuminates even the most terrible darkness of an adverse destiny? And who will speak to me in the same clear voice, telling me affectionate words full of deep love? I am to blame for all this; I should not have allowed her to follow me here, to this harsh forest devoid of all comfort and filled only with Raksasas and wild animals. Just because of my selfishness I allowed her to follow me», he thought.

Laksmana was also heartbroken, and the more he saw his brother crying and complaining, the more guilty he felt. He tried to console him, and he told him:

“We’ll find her. You’ll see we’ll find her. Let’s keep looking. Don’t be discouraged. You’ll see we’ll find her.”
