Jatayu Defeated by Ravana
The old vulture Jatayu, their dear friend, saw the whole scene and, as soon as the chariot was in the sky, he attacked. But he knew he was attempting a desperate undertaking. In a generous and futile attempt to free Sita, Jatayu attacked the invincible Raksasa. He fought with great valor, killing the charioteer, the magical mules that pulled the chariot, and destroying the chariot itself. He even managed to hurt Ravana. Ravana’s rage flared up like the fire of universal dissolution. He furiously grabbed his sword and with vigorous blows cut off the legs and wings of poor Jatayu who, mortally wounded, fell to the ground.
Now nobody could fight him anymore. With the chariot destroyed, Ravana carried Sita away in flight. Desperate, Sita wept and lamented over Jatayu’s death and his cruel fate.
