Hanuman Meets Rama

With the approval of all others, and having assumed the form of an ascetic, Hanuman made his way to the place where Rama and Laksmana were. He greeted them.

“How are you?” He said. “I hope that everything goes well in your life and that luck always smiles at you.”

Rama offered respectful obeisances to him who believed to be an ascetic and replied that luck had not been very kind to them in recent times.

“Who are you?” Hanuman went on. “Which family do you come from? And, what are you doing on these hills, home of the noble Vanaras, virtuously guided by the brave Sugriva?”

“My name is Rama,” he replied, “and this is my brother Laksmana. We are princes in exile and our father was the king of Ayodhya, Dasaratha. We are here to meet Sugriva and to make friends with him. Do you know him? Do you know where he is? “

When Hanuman heard that that noble young man standing in front of him was the famous Rama he had heard about so many times and whom he secretly worshiped as his deity, he could no longer contain his joy. He abandoned the appearance of an ascetic, resumed his natural features and threw himself at Rama’s feet.

“I finally got to know you, look at you, hear your words. I am Hanuman, one of Sugriva’s assistants. He is here in this forest out of fear of his brother and is always wary of those he does not know. Come, I’ll take you to him.”

Rama smiled heartily. He was happy to have found Sugriva so soon. He again reassured Hanuman:

“You don’t have to be afraid of us. We are not anyone’s hit men. We only came to make friends with your king.”
