Both the Vishnu and Brahma Puranas speak about nine divisions in Bharata varsha (as well as the nine varshas of Jambudvipa).
Brahma names them as Indradvipa, Kaseruman, Tamraparna, Gabhastiman, Nagadvipa, Saumya, Gandharva, Varuna and the ninth is named as Bharata, which is described as being 1000 yojanas ‘north to south’, and ‘encircled by the ocean’.
Interestingly, Vishnu Purana does not name the ninth, Bharata, but in his commentary on this, Sridhar Swami (the SB commentator) says that the ninth is Navadvipa Dhama, and that it is 1000 yojanas north to south, same as the Bharata mentioned in the Brahma Purana.
As we know, Navadvipa is in fact around 90 square miles in size, so where is the rest of it? Sridhar Swami is silent on this point.
And where are the other islands, each I believe said to be 1000 yojanas in size? (Thus making the 9000 yojanas of Bharata as also described in SB)
