Dasaratha’s Four Sons
The children were born. Kausalya was the first to give birth, and her son was named Rama. Then Kaikeyi gave birth, and his son was called Bharata. Finally, Sumitra gave birth to twins, who were given the names of Laksmana and Satrughna.
The children grew up day by day, and were full of all good qualities. They were handsome, strong, skilled, courageous, kind, virtuous, and devoted to the principles of religion. All these qualities were present in the children of Dasaratha, who did not know how to hide his joy and his love for the boys. In particular, Rama was the most loved, and not only by his father, but also by anyone who knew him. From childhood, Laksmana felt a spontaneous love towards her older brother and the two did not separate even for a moment. Satrughna, on the other hand, developed a particular feeling for Bharata. But there was no envy or competition between them; the four loved each other with a deep brotherly love.
When the boys were of marriageable age, the king began to consider different possibilities. There were countless noble and beautiful princesses, and they would all be delighted to marry his children.
