Looking for Sita

Hanuman searched everywhere, but Sita was nowhere to be found. Finally, in a bedroom filled with unspeakable opulence as he had never seen before, gigantic and shining as the sun, he saw Ravana, the king of the Raksasas. He looked at his powerful body and was glad he was sleeping.

«No, Sita couldn’t be there,» he thought. «The most chaste of women would rather die than lie with someone other than her husband».

He kept searching, looking in every corner of the vast palace. In an enchanting garden he saw the Puspaka chariot, which had belonged to Kuvera, and bowed to pay respectful obeisances. He found the harem, and in a beautiful room he saw Mandodari, Ravana’s wife. Hanuman was dazzled by so much splendor. She was so beautiful that Hanuman thought she was Sita. He was seized with great joy, but then he thought better of it:

«No, Sita would never get down to Ravana’s harem. That woman couldn’t be Sita. It couldn’t be her.»

Unable to find her, Hanuman was very discouraged. Could Ravana have killed her for refusing to submit to his will? He thought that if Sita had died, he would kill Ravana and then would fast to death. An immense rage flooded his heart.
