During the Vedic period education was based on vocation determined by caste and the function of education was to provide knowledge.

So Brahmins attended Vedic colleges and studied the Vedas and the law-books (Dharma-Shastras), the Domestic Rituals (Grihya Sutra) etc. Some schools would offer higher education in philosophy and metaphysics.

Kshatriyas also studied the Vedas in addition to martial arts.

The Vaishyas and Sudras studied the various crafts which pertained to their work. Farming, animal husbandry, carpentry, metallurgy, pottery, building, chariot-construction, smithery etc.
