How do Vedic texts explain the waxing and waning of the moon?

According to Hindu mythology Chandra (Moon) was married to the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati. He was actually in love with Rohini but Daksha wanted to marry them all off in a batch load. Chandra was admonished to treat them all equally, but Chandra had a particular passion for Rohini and spent a little more time with her than the others. Daksha came to know of this and cursed Chandra to wax and wane because of his broken promise.

The 27 daughters in this myth are the 27 nakshatras or Lunar Mansions into which the ecliptic of 360 degrees is divided.

The #Moon is exalted (strongest position) in the constellation of Rohini which means “red cow” consisting of five stars looking like a chariot or cart.

The presiding deity of Rohini is Brahma – the father of universe. He is also called Prajapati, the Lord of Created beings. His residential place is called Manovati (the Plane of the Mind).

Rohini is also the Nakshatra under which Lord Krishna was born and so it is one of the most auspicious of the Nakshatras.
