1. Once upon a time Ravana was preparing for the birth of his child Meghnaad. During the birth of Meghnaad, Ravana instructed all the Navagrahas to stay in the 11th house of Meghnaad’s horoscope.
2. All the planets including the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter stayed in the 11th house of Meghnaad’s horoscope as per Ravana’s instructions.
3. But Shanidev refused to comply with Ravana’s orders even though the Asura king was immensely powerful. Shani settled in the 12th house of Meghnaad’s horoscope and Ravana was panicked.
4. Ravana worried about the malefic gaze of Shani known as “Vakra Drishti”, and it’s effect which would effect his son’s life. So he imprisoned Shanidev. But Shanidev cursed Ravana and said that Lanka would burn violently in the Treta Yuga. Shanidev also stated that Ravana’s greed and malice would be the end of him.
5. Shanidev secretly set his gaze on Ravana which reduced Ravana’s wisdom significantly. That is why Ravana took the impulsive decision of kidnapping Sita. Hanuman had come to Lanka to check if Sita was alive.
6. While at Lanka, Lord Hanuman came across Shanidev and freed him from his imprisonment. Lord Hanuman had burned Lanka but some of it still remained. So he explained this to Shanidev, who said that he would help Hanuman burn Lanka to ashes.
7. Shanidev gazed on Lanka from the top of a tall mountain and the entire city was reduced to ash. Shanidev’s “Vakra Drishti” also became a cause for the death of Meghnaad, the son of Ravana. Lord Hanuman was very pleased by Shanidev’s power and praised him as being worthy of worship.
