The first is the initial stage of devotion, in which the devotee’s heart is still contaminated with material desires and aspirations. For him, there are numerous rules and prohibitions (vidhi and nisheda), which aim to purify him and take him further and further, in the direction of spontaneous love, called raga-bhakti. At that stage there are no more rules, as love will be perfectly natural and flow spontaneously, as is the norm for any sincere feeling. In Caitanya Caritamrita (Madhyalila 22, from verse 105), Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu instructs Sanatana Gosvami:

“When transcendental devotional service, by which love for Krsna is attained, is performed by the senses, it is called sadhana-bhakti, or the practice of the disciplines of devotional service. This devotional feeling exists eternally in the hearts of the living entities. Eternal love occurs through the practice of devotional service. The spiritual activities of listening, chanting, remembering (and others) are the natural characteristics of devotional service, while its marginal quality is that it awakens pure love for Krsna.”

“This love for Sri Krsna which is eternally established in the hearts of every living entity is not something to be acquired from a second source.
