The Surasa Demon<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n

As Hanuman proceeded at great speed towards his destination, Surasa, the mother of the Nagas, thought to test Hanuman’s abilities. Thus, she took the form of a giant Rakshasi and emerged from the water just as Hanuman was passing. She looked at him fiercely and spoke to him, assuming a hostile aspect.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI’m hungry,\u201d said Surasa, \u201cand I want you to be my food today. But I also admire the qualities of the brave, the sagacity, and the strength. You look very strong, and I want to give you a chance. I’ll let you live if you can get into my mouth and then get out. If you are so skilled, I will let you go.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Moved by pride, Hanuman wanted to show Surasa his abilities and expanded the body to gigantic size. But so did she. And Hanuman expanded further, but Surasa imitated him. The two continued to grow larger, until Hanuman flashed his body and entered Surasa’s mouth. Unable to shrink as quickly, Surasa did not have time to close the huge jaws and Hanuman was able to get out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Satisfied with this test of intelligence, Surasa blessed him and let him continue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hanuman resumed his journey.<\/span><\/p>\n
