\u201cGloomy days are approaching,\u201d he said. \u201cIt will be a time when truth will be temporarily covered by ungodliness and falsehood. Much blood and tears from mothers, wives, children, friends, and relatives will flow over these lands. It will not be long before there is no one in this world who doesn\u2019t have someone to cry for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Satyavati was alarmed by her son’s words.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you say? What will happen, and who will have to cry for their loved ones?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDhritarastra\u2019s sons are evil, and because of their wickedness, the entire lineage of the Kshatriyas of the earth will perish in a terrible war. There is nothing that can be done to avoid it, as Dhritarastra refused to follow Vidura\u2019s advice at the time of Duryodhana’s birth. This war is willed by the Devas and by the Supreme Lord Himself. Soon, much pain will flow like a curse over all of Bharata-varsha.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Satyavati knew that Vyasa’s words could not prove to be wrong, so, not wanting to witness those catastrophic events, she announced that she wanted to retire to a meditative life in the forest. Ambika and Ambalika wanted to follow her.<\/span><\/p>\n
