I heard the Ramayana &#8211; and the Maha-bharata, another of the most important Indian poems &#8211; for the first time when I was eighteen. I was so enthusiastic about it that for many years I have cherished the desire to write short stories drawn from that literature, and not only from the Ramayana or the Maha-bharata, but also from other ancient texts, such as the Puranas.
