What is consciousness? How can we define it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The following verse from the Mundaka Upanisad (3.1.9) that we find in Srila Prabhupada\u2019s Bhagavad-gita (2.17, purport) gives us a clear definition:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">e\u1e63o \u2019\u1e47ur \u0101tm\u0101 cetas\u0101 veditavyo<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">yasmin pr\u0101\u1e47a\u1e25 pa\u00f1cadh\u0101 sa\u1e41vive\u015ba<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">pr\u0101\u1e47ai\u015b citta\u1e41 sarvam ota\u1e41 praj\u0101n\u0101\u1e41<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">yasmin vi\u015buddhe vibhavaty e\u1e63a \u0101tm\u0101<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">\u201cThe soul is atomic in size and can be perceived by perfect intelligence.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">This atomic soul is floating in the five kinds of air (pr\u0101\u1e47a, ap\u0101na, vy\u0101na, sam\u0101na and ud\u0101na),<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">is situated within the heart, and spreads its influence all over the body of the embodied living entities. When the soul is purified from the contamination of the five kinds of material air, its spiritual influence is exhibited.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">So consciousness is a capacity of the spiritual soul to perceive what\u2019s happening in our mortal frame since it spreads its influence all over that body.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">If we touch our finger we feel the touch because the soul is spreading its influence everywhere his body, including the finger. If we cut the finger that perception is not there anymore because the influense of the jiva is limited to his body and not outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Therefore the meaning of the expression \u201cKrishna consciousness\u201d is that we\u2019ll be able to perceive Krishna\u2019s presence everywhere, even in our heart where our loving propensities are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">&#8211; Manonatha Dasa (ACBSP)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day we were talking about consciousness.
