{"id":4027,"date":"2019-06-08T14:07:30","date_gmt":"2019-06-08T18:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/?p=4027"},"modified":"2019-06-08T14:20:59","modified_gmt":"2019-06-08T18:20:59","slug":"why-do-i-need-a-diksa-guru-if-i-have-so-many-siksa-gurus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/why-do-i-need-a-diksa-guru-if-i-have-so-many-siksa-gurus\/","title":{"rendered":"Why do I need a Diksa Guru if I can have many Siksa Gurus?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014-01-06-07.53.11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4029\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014-01-06-07.53.11-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014-01-06-07.53.11-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014-01-06-07.53.11-410x270.jpg 410w, https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014-01-06-07.53.11-364x242.jpg 364w, https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014-01-06-07.53.11.jpg 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Question<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nWhy do I need a Diksa Guru if I have so many Siksa and also I have Srila Prabhupad who can instruct me?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Answer<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe mechanism of diksa works this way: a disciple asks \u201cplease accept me\u201d and a Guru says \u201cyes\u201d, if he so wants.<\/p>\n<p>Without a \u201cyes\u201d you are nobody\u2019s disciple and the idea of \u201cso many siksa gurus\u201d and \u201cI can read Srila Prabhupada\u2019s books\u201d is a cover for an anarchic mentality, where you say to have many gurus when you actually have and want nobody.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cyes\u201d by the Guru is the key to spiritual life and only at that moment you are connected to the parampara and to Krishna.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The story of Ekalavya (Maha-bharata, Adi Parva, Sambhava Parva, Adhyaya 32) in this regard it is instructive.<br \/>\nEkalavya asked Dronacarya to accept him as a disciple but was refused. Ekalavya continued to consider himself a disciple of Dronacarya, built a Murti of him and practice Dhanurveda in the forest worshiping Drona. He made great progress but not as much as he would if Dronacarya had accepted him. When Drona came to know that Ekalavya said he was his disciple, he pretended Guru Daksina and only at that point Ekalavya became his disciple. In his case initiation was the Guru Daksina because if Drona had accepted Guru Daksina meant that he had accepted him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In other words, you can\u2019t say you are somebody\u2019s disciple (in diksa or siksa line, is the same) unless the Guru says yes.<br \/>\nHere is where the \u201cRitvik-vadis\u201d are wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, this yes could have the form of a formal initiation, like the one we are used to with the fire ceremony and all, or could be a simple \u201cyes, I accept you as a disciple\u201d, or in other forms but some formal initiation is compulsory.<br \/>\nAgain, formality doesn\u2019t mean superfluous but completing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Few quotes from Srila Prabhupada:<br \/>\n\u201cThe connection with the spiritual master is called initiation. From the date of initiation by the spiritual master, the connection between Krsna and a person cultivating Krsna consciousness is established. Without initiation by a bona fide spiritual master, the actual connection with Krsna consciousness is never performed.\u201d<br \/>\n(Nectar of devotion, Introduction)<\/p>\n<p>In other words, without some type of initiation you are not connected to Krishna. The connection is only through the Guru.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More:<br \/>\n\u201cOne is not considered a perfectly cultured man without being initiated and trained by an acarya. It is said, therefore, that one who has approached an acarya is actually in perfect knowledge.<br \/>\n(From Krishna Book)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And more:<br \/>\n[\u2026] He must be properly initiated. [\u2026] You can \u2013 you must be initiated, either you are a grhastha or sannyasi or brahmacari. Not that without being initiate you\u2019ll whimsically chant and the effect will be the same. No, you must be initiated. Adau gurvasraya. You must accept a Guru.<br \/>\n(Lecture by Srila Prabhupada, London 9\/23\/69)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And more:<br \/>\n\u201c[\u2026] Arjuna was hearing Krishna speaking Bhagavad-Gita but still he submitted as Krishna\u2019s disciple. \u2018Now I submit unto You, please teach me.\u2019 So this is the process\u2026<br \/>\n(Srila Prabhupada, Letter to John Darsinos, 11\/23\/68)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are only a few of the many quotes we could gather from Guru, Sastra and Sadhu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now that we have ascertained that \u201csome type of initiation\u201d is mandatory, it is useful to understand why.<\/p>\n<p>This question can be easily seen through if we understand what is Krishna Consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>Krishna Consciousness it\u2019s not based on jnana (knowledge) but on bhakti (devotion). Jnana is an instrument of bhakti, not the final goal. Without bhakti, you know but you don\u2019t taste, like the example of the bee buzzing around the honey jar.<\/p>\n<p>If Krishna Consciousness was based on knowledge, then one would be right by saying, \u201cI just need siksa gurus and books. The more the better.\u201d This is what mayavadis and the like say.<br \/>\nBut Krishna Consciousness is different. Unless one doesn\u2019t develop attraction for Krishna through studies, this knowledge will not do much.<\/p>\n<p>Guru is sevaka-bhagavan, represent Krishna and should be treated as Krishna. He is not Krishna but must be treated as Krishna.<br \/>\nAnd why is that?<br \/>\nBecause you cannot hear or see the Srimurti speaking or moving, nor the Mahamantra, nor the prasadam. Guru speaks and you can hear him, you can see him living, moving and personally relating with you.<br \/>\nServing him as you would serve Krishna is the perfect training for devotion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Therefore if you do not formally accept somebody (diksa or siksa) as a guru, you may become a great scholar but not a pure devotee.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additional note:<br \/>\nSometimes we see devotees asking to a Guru to accept them. The Guru says \u201cyes\u201d, but the then they forget about this or goes to someone else.
