{"id":38404,"date":"2020-02-14T21:21:24","date_gmt":"2020-02-15T02:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/?p=38404"},"modified":"2022-02-14T21:22:27","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T02:22:27","slug":"the-nectar-of-devotion-chapter-forty-one-fraternal-devotion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/the-nectar-of-devotion-chapter-forty-one-fraternal-devotion\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nectar of Devotion &#8211; CHAPTER FORTY-ONE  Fraternal Devotion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHAPTER FORTY-ONE<\/p>\n<p>Fraternal Devotion<\/p>\n<p>When a devotee is permanently situated in devotional service, and by different symptoms of ecstasy he has developed and matured a fraternal mellow or flavor in relationship with the Personality of Godhead, his feeling is called fraternal love of Godhead.<\/p>\n<p>The impetus for such fraternal love of God is God Himself. When one is liberated and discovers his eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord, the Lord Himself becomes the impetus for increasing fraternal love. The eternal associates of the Lord in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana have described this as follows: \u201cThe Lord, Hari, whose bodily hue is like the indran\u012bla jewel, whose smiling is as beautiful as the kunda flower, whose silk dress is as yellow as golden autumn foliage, whose chest is beautified with garlands of flowers and who is always playing upon His flute \u2013 this enemy of the Agha demon is always attracting our hearts by wandering about V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are similar statements of fraternal love expressed outside the jurisdiction of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana. When the sons of P\u0101\u1e47\u1e0du, headed by Mah\u0101r\u0101ja Yudhi\u1e63\u1e6dhira, saw K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a in His four-handed form on the Battlefield of Kuruk\u1e63etra, holding His conch shell, disc, club and lotus flower, they completely forgot themselves and became merged in the ocean of nectarean happiness. This shows how the sons of P\u0101\u1e47\u1e0du \u2013 King Yudhi\u1e63\u1e6dhira, Bh\u012bma, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva \u2013 were all caught up in fraternal love for K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the different names, forms, paraphernalia and transcendental qualities provoke fraternal love. For instance, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s nice dress, His strongly built body, the all-auspicious symptoms on His body, His knowledge of different languages, His learned teachings in Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101, His uncommon genius in all fields of endeavor, His exhibition of expert knowledge, His mercy, His chivalry, His behavior as a conjugal lover, His intelligence, His forgiveness, His attraction for all kinds of men, His opulence and His happiness all provoke fraternal love.<\/p>\n<p>The impetus to fraternal love upon seeing the associates of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana is also very natural, for their personal bodily features, their qualities and their dress are all equal to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s. These associates are always happy in their service to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, and they are generally known as vayasyas, or friends of the same age. The vayasyas are fully confident of protection by K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Devotees sometimes pray, \u201cLet us offer our respectful obeisances unto the vayasyas of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, who are firmly convinced of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s friendship and protection and whose devotion to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is ever fixed. They are fearless, and on a level equal with K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a they discharge their transcendental loving devotional service.\u201d Such eternal vayasyas are also found beyond the jurisdiction of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana in places such as Dv\u0101rak\u0101 and Hastin\u0101pura. Except for V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana, all the places of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s pastimes are called puras (towns). Mathur\u0101 and Hastin\u0101pura, the capital of the Kurus, are both puras. Personalities like Arjuna, Bh\u012bma, Draupad\u012b and \u015ar\u012bd\u0101m\u0101 Br\u0101hma\u1e47a are counted among K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s fraternal devotees in the puras.<\/p>\n<p>How the sons of P\u0101\u1e47\u1e0du, the P\u0101\u1e47\u1e0davas, enjoy K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s association is described as follows: \u201cWhen \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a arrived in Indraprastha, the capital of the Kurus, Mah\u0101r\u0101ja Yudhi\u1e63\u1e6dhira immediately came out to smell the flavor of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s head.\u201d It is the Vedic custom that a superior smells the heads of his subordinates when the subordinates offer respect to the superior by touching his feet. Similarly, Arjuna and Bh\u012bma embraced K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a with great jubilation, and the two younger brothers, namely, Nakula and Sahadeva, touched the lotus feet of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a with tears in their eyes and offered their respects. In this way all the five P\u0101\u1e47\u1e0dava brothers enjoyed the fraternal friendship of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a in transcendental mellow. Of the five P\u0101\u1e47\u1e0davas, Arjuna is the most intimately connected with K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. He has a nice bow called G\u0101\u1e47\u1e0d\u012bva in his hand. His thighs are compared to the trunks of elephants, and his eyes are always reddish. When K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and Arjuna are together on a chariot, they become celestial beauties, pleasing to the eyes of everyone. It is said that once Arjuna was lying on his bed with his head upon K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s lap and was talking and joking with K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a in great relaxation, enjoying K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s company with smiling and great satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the vayasyas (friends) in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana are concerned, they become greatly distressed when they cannot see K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a even for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>There is the following prayer by a devotee for the vayasyas in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana: \u201cAll glories to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s vayasyas, who are just like K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a in their age, qualities, pastimes, dress and beauty. They are accustomed to playing on their flutes made of palm leaves, and they all have buffalo-horn bugles ornamented like K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s with jewels such as indran\u012bla and with gold and coral. They are always jubilant like K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. May these glorious companions of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a always protect us!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vayasyas in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana are in such intimate friendship with K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a that sometimes they think themselves as good as K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Here is an instance of such friendly feeling: When K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a was holding up Govardhana Hill with His left hand, the vayasyas said, \u201cDear friend, You have been standing for the last seven days and nights without any rest. This is very troublesome for us, because we see that You have undertaken a severely laborious task. We think, therefore, that You need not continue to stand in that way holding the hill. You can just transfer it onto Sud\u0101m\u0101\u2019s hand. We are very much aggrieved to see You in this position. If you think that Sud\u0101m\u0101 is not able to support Govardhana Hill, then at least You should change hands. Instead of supporting it with Your left hand, please transfer it to Your right hand, so that we can give Your left hand a massage.\u201d This is an instance of intimacy, showing how much the vayasyas considered themselves to be equal to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a.<\/p>\n<p>In \u015ar\u012bmad-Bh\u0101gavatam, Tenth Canto, twelfth chapter, verse 11, \u015aukadeva Gosv\u0101m\u012b tells King Par\u012bk\u1e63it, \u201cMy dear King, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is the Supreme Personality of Godhead to the learned transcendentalist, He is the supreme happiness for the impersonalist, He is the supreme worshipable Deity for the devotee, and He is just like an ordinary boy to one who is under the spell of m\u0101y\u0101. And just imagine \u2013 these cowherd boys are now playing with the Supreme Person as though they were on an equal level! By this anyone can understand that these boys must have accumulated heaps of the results of pious activities to enable them to associate with the Supreme Personality of Godhead in such intimate friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a description of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s feeling for His vayasyas in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana. He once said to Balar\u0101ma, \u201cMy dear brother, when My companions were being devoured by the Agh\u0101sura, hot tears poured down from My eyes. And as they were washing My cheeks, My dear elder brother, for at least one moment I completely lost Myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within Gokula, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s vayasyas are generally divided into four groups: (1) well-wishers, (2) friends, (3) confidential friends and (4) intimate friends. K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s well-wisher friends are a little bit older than K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, and they have some parental affection for Him. Because of their being older than K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, they always try to protect Him from any harm. As such, they sometimes bear weapons so that they can chastise any mischievous persons who want to do harm to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Counted among the well-wisher friends are Subhadra,* Ma\u1e47\u1e0dal\u012bbhadra, Bhadravardhana, Gobha\u1e6da, Yak\u1e63a, Indrabha\u1e6da, Bhadr\u0101\u1e45ga, V\u012brabhadra, Mah\u0101gu\u1e47a, Vijaya and Balabhadra. They are older than K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and are always thinking of His welfare.<\/p>\n<p>* Not to be confused with K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s sister, Subhadr\u0101.<\/p>\n<p>One of the elderly friends said, \u201cMy dear Ma\u1e47\u1e0dal\u012bbhadra, why are you wielding a shining sword as though you were running toward Ari\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101sura to kill him? My dear Baladeva, why are You unnecessarily bearing that heavy plow? My dear Vijaya, don\u2019t be unnecessarily agitated. My dear Bhadravardhana, there is no need to make these threatening motions. If you will all look more closely you will see that it is only a thundercloud upon Govardhana Hill; it is not the Ari\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101sura in the shape of a bull, as you have imagined.\u201d These older, well-wishing friends of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a had imagined a large cloud to be the Ari\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101sura, appearing in the shape of a huge bull. In the midst of their excitement one of them ascertained that it was actually only a cloud on Govardhana Hill. He therefore informed the others not to take the trouble of worrying about K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, because there was no present danger from Ari\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101sura.<\/p>\n<p>Among the well-wisher friends, Ma\u1e47\u1e0dal\u012bbhadra and Balabhadra are the chiefs. Ma\u1e47\u1e0dal\u012bbhadra is described as follows: His complexion is yellowish, and his dress is very attractive. He always carries a stick of various colors. He wears a peacock feather on his head and always looks very beautiful. Ma\u1e47\u1e0dal\u012bbhadra\u2019s attitude is revealed in this statement: \u201cMy dear friends, our beloved K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is now very tired from working with the cows in the pasturing grounds and from traveling all over the forests. I can see that He is very fatigued. Let me massage His head silently while He is taking rest in His house. And you, Subala \u2013 you just massage His thighs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One devotee described the personal beauty of Baladeva as follows \u201cLet me take shelter of the lotus feet of Balar\u0101ma, whose beauty is enhanced by the earrings touching His cheeks. His face is decorated with tilaka made from kast\u016br\u012b [musk], and His broad chest is decorated with a garland of gu\u00f1j\u0101 [small conch shells]. His complexion is as white as an autumn cloud, He wears garments of blue color, and His voice is very grave. His arms are very long, touching His thighs, and He has shown His great strength by killing the Pralamba demon. Let me take shelter of this chivalrous Balar\u0101ma.\u201d*<\/p>\n<p>* Balar\u0101ma and Baladeva are different names for the same expansion of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. He is K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s elder brother.<\/p>\n<p>Baladeva\u2019s affection for K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is illustrated in this statement to Subala: \u201cMy dear friend, please inform K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a not to go to K\u0101liya\u2019s lake today. Today is His birthday, and so I wish to go along with mother Ya\u015bod\u0101 to bathe Him. Tell Him He should not leave the house today.\u201d This shows how Balar\u0101ma, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s elder brother, took care of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a with parental love, within the scope of fraternal affection.<\/p>\n<p>Friends who are younger than K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, who are always attached to Him and who give Him all kinds of service are called ordinary friends, or, simply, friends. Such ordinary friends are called sakh\u0101s, and the names of some sakh\u0101s are Vi\u015b\u0101la, V\u1e5b\u1e63abha, Ojasv\u012b, Devaprastha, Var\u016bthapa, Maranda, Kusum\u0101p\u012b\u1e0da, Ma\u1e47ibandha and Karandhama. All of these sakh\u0101 friends of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a seek only to serve Him. Sometimes some of them would rise early in the morning and immediately go to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s place and wait at the door to see K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and to accompany Him to the pasturing grounds. In the meantime, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a would be dressed by mother Ya\u015bod\u0101, and when she would see a boy standing at the door, she would call him, \u201cWell, Vi\u015b\u0101la, why are you standing there? Come here!\u201d So with the permission of mother Ya\u015bod\u0101, he would immediately enter the house. And while mother Ya\u015bod\u0101 was dressing K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, he would try to help put on K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s ankle bells, and K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a would jokingly strike him with His flute. Then mother Ya\u015bod\u0101 would call, \u201cK\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, what is this? Why are You teasing Your friend?\u201d And K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a would laugh, and the friend would also laugh. These are some of the activities of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s sakh\u0101s. Sometimes the sakh\u0101s would take care of the cows who were going hither and thither. They would tell K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, \u201cYour cows were going off here and there,\u201d and K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a would thank them.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes when K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and His sakh\u0101s went to the pasturing ground, Ka\u1e41sa would send a demon to kill K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Therefore, almost every day there was a fight with some different kind of demon. After fighting with a demon, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a would feel fatigued, the hairs on His head would be scattered, and the sakh\u0101s would immediately come and try to relieve Him in different ways. Some friends would say, \u201cMy dear Vi\u015b\u0101la, please take this fan of lotus leaves and fan K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a so that He may feel some comfort. Var\u016bthapa, you just brush the scattered hairs on K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s head which have fallen upon His face. V\u1e5b\u1e63abha, don\u2019t talk unnecessarily! Immediately massage K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s body. His arms have become tired from fighting and wrestling with that demon. Oh, just see how our friend K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a has become tired!\u201d These are some examples of the treatment given to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a by the sakh\u0101s.<\/p>\n<p>One of the sakh\u0101s, known as Devaprastha, is described as follows. He is very strong, a ready scholar, and is very expert in playing ball. He wears a white dress, and he ties his hair into a bunch with a rope. Whenever there is a fight between K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and the demons, Devaprastha is the first to help, and he fights just like an elephant.<\/p>\n<p>One of the gop\u012bs once said to her friend, \u201cMy dear beautiful friend, when K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, the son of Mah\u0101r\u0101ja Nanda, was taking rest within the cave of a hill, He was keeping His head on the arms of \u015ar\u012bd\u0101m\u0101, and He was putting His left hand on D\u0101m\u0101\u2019s chest. Taking this opportunity, Devaprastha, out of his strong affection for K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, immediately began to massage His legs.\u201d Such are the activities of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s friends out on the pasturing grounds.<\/p>\n<p>The more confidential friends are called priya-sakh\u0101s and are almost K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s age. Because of their very confidential friendship, their behavior is only on the basis of pure friendship. The behavior of other friends is on the ground of parental love or servitude, but the basic principle of the confidential friends is simply friendship on an equal level. Some confidential friends are as follows: \u015ar\u012bd\u0101m\u0101, Sud\u0101m\u0101, D\u0101m\u0101, Vasud\u0101m\u0101, Ki\u1e45ki\u1e47i, Stoka-k\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, A\u1e41\u015bu, Bhadrasena, Vil\u0101s\u012b, Pu\u1e47\u1e0dar\u012bka, Vi\u1e6da\u1e45ka and Kalavi\u1e45ka. By their various activities in different pastimes, all of these friends used to give transcendental pleasure to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a.<\/p>\n<p>The behavior of these confidential friends is described by a friend of R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b who told R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, \u201cMy dear graceful R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, Your intimate friend K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is also served by His intimate boyfriends. Some of them cut jokes with Him in mild voices and please Him very much by this.\u201d For example, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a had one br\u0101hma\u1e47a friend whose name was Madhuma\u1e45gala. This boy would joke by playing the part of a greedy br\u0101hma\u1e47a. Whenever the friends ate, he would eat more than all others, especially la\u1e0d\u1e0dus, of which he was very fond. Then after eating more la\u1e0d\u1e0dus than anyone else, Madhuma\u1e45gala would still not be satisfied, and he would say to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, \u201cIf You give me one more la\u1e0d\u1e0du, then I shall be pleased to give You my blessings so that Your friend R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b will be very much pleased with You.\u201d The br\u0101hma\u1e47as are supposed to give blessings to the vai\u015byas (farming and merchant caste), and K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a presented Himself as the son of Mah\u0101r\u0101ja Nanda, a vai\u015bya; so the br\u0101hma\u1e47a boy was right in giving blessings to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Thus K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a was very pleased by His friend\u2019s blessings, and He would supply him with more and more la\u1e0d\u1e0dus.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes a confidential friend would come before K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and embrace Him with great affection and love. Another friend would then come up from the rear and cover K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s eyes with his hands. K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a would always feel very happy by such dealings with His confidential friends.<\/p>\n<p>Out of all these confidential friends, \u015ar\u012bd\u0101m\u0101 is considered to be the chief. \u015ar\u012bd\u0101m\u0101 used to put on a yellow-colored dress. He would carry a buffalo horn, and his turban was of a reddish copper color. His bodily complexion was blackish, and around his neck there was a nice garland. He would always challenge K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a in joking friendship. Let us pray to \u015ar\u012bd\u0101m\u0101 to bestow his mercy upon us!<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes \u015ar\u012bd\u0101m\u0101 used to address K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, \u201cOh, You are so cruel that You left us alone on the bank of the Yamun\u0101, and we were all mad from not seeing You there! Now it is our great fortune that we are able to see You here. If You want to pacify us, You must embrace each one of us with Your arms. But believe me, my dear friend, a moment\u2019s absence from You creates great havoc, not only for us but for the cows also. Everything becomes disarranged, and we become mad after You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are other friends who are still more confidential. They are called priya-narm\u0101, or intimate friends. Counted among the priya-narm\u0101 friends are Subala, Arjuna, Gandharva, Vasanta and Ujjvala. There was talk among the friends of R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b, the gop\u012bs, about these most intimate friends. One gop\u012b addressed R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b thus: \u201cMy dear K\u1e5b\u015b\u0101\u1e45g\u012b [delicate one], just see how Subala is whispering Your message into K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s ear, how he is delivering the confidential letter of \u015ay\u0101m\u0101-d\u0101s\u012b silently into K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s hand, how he is delivering the betel nuts prepared by P\u0101lik\u0101 into K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s mouth, and how he is decorating K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a with the garland prepared by T\u0101rak\u0101. Did you know, my dear friend, that all these most intimate friends of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a are always engaged in His service in this way?\u201d Out of the many intimate priya-narm\u0101s, Subala and Ujjvala are considered to be the most prominent.<\/p>\n<p>Subala\u2019s body is described as follows. His complexion is just like molten gold. He is very, very dear to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. He always has a garland around his neck, and he wears yellow clothing. His eyes are just like lotus flower petals, and he is so intelligent that by his talking and his moral instructions all the other friends take the highest pleasure. Let us all offer our respectful obeisances unto K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s friend Subala!<\/p>\n<p>The degree of intimacy shared by K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and Subala can be understood by the fact that the talks between them were so confidential that no one else could understand what they were saying.<\/p>\n<p>The description of Ujjvala, another intimate friend, is given as follows. Ujjvala always wears some garment of orange color, and the movements of his eyes are always very restless. He likes to decorate himself with all kinds of flowers, his bodily hue is almost like K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s, and on his neck there is always a necklace of pearls. He is always very dear to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. Let us all worship Ujjvala, the most intimate friend of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a!<\/p>\n<p>About the confidential service of Ujjvala, this statement is to be found, addressed by R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b to one of Her friends: \u201cMy dear friend, it is impossible for Me to keep My prestige! I wanted to avoid talking to K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a anymore \u2013 but just see! There again is His friend Ujjvala, coming to Me with his canvassing work.
