{"id":24651,"date":"2025-12-20T01:36:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T20:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/?p=24651"},"modified":"2025-12-19T18:17:40","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T12:47:40","slug":"jumping-to-raganuga-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/jumping-to-raganuga-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Jumping to Raganuga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22860\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isvara.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/images-1-6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The following is a quote from Thakura Bhaktivinoda:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cWhen a devotee following the path of vaidhi-bhakti abandons his various material desires and executes bhajana according to the instructions of the scriptures, the spiritual master and the Vaisnavas, then taste (ruci), manifests in his bhajana. When ruci thus appears, he abandons the path of vaidhi-bhakti and enters the plane of raganuga-bhakti.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Those who do not wish to progress in Krsna consciousness step by step, but instead prefer to jump ahead to rasa, are sometimes called \u201cgatecrashers\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">It is also to be understood that simply talking about rasa does not mean that one has attained the stage of raganuga-bhakti. Talk is cheap, whereas the actual qualifications for rasa are very rare. It is also seen that the pseudo-guru claims himself to be a \u2018rasika,\u2019 when in fact he still manifests the symptoms of kama, krodha, and lobha \u2013 lust for wealth, anger toward anyone who does not blindly accept him as guru, and greed to initiate anyone who crosses his path \u2013 even though such persons may have already been duly initiated by a bona-fide spiritual master. Such deluded persons think that they have attained raganuga-bhakti simply by hearing the lilas of Krsna, but such persons should remember that krsna-lila is also sometimes available in comic books in India.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">It should not go without mention that many of the pseudo-gurus, past and present, claiming to be on the platform of a rasika, display the classic symptoms of narcissism. Narcissism is a material condition (a psychological illness) wherein one suffers from:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">1) a grandiose sense of self-importance,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">2) a preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, and ideal love,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">3) a belief that he is special and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">4) a requirement for excessive admiration and worship,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">5) a sense of entitlement \u2013 unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his expectations,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">6) a despotic mentality, repressing and exploiting others,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">7) a lack of empathy, unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings or needs of others,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">8) envy of others, also believing that others are envious of him,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">9) an arrogant or haughty attitude.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Such persons are never truly rasika.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Addendum<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">I take this opportunity to clarify what Raganuga actually is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Many say that Raganuga is \u201cspontaneous devotional service\u201d but become confused when asked what is the difference with Ragatmika.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">ei ta s\u0101dhana-bhakti \u2014 dui ta\u2019 prak\u0101ra<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">eka \u2018vaidh\u012b bhakti\u2019, \u2018r\u0101g\u0101nug\u0101-bhakti\u2019 \u0101ra<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cThere are two processes of sadhana bhakti: vaidhi and raganuga.\u201d<br \/>\n(Caitanya Caritamrita, Madhya-lila 22.108)<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Sadhana means devotional service \u201cin practice\u201d. We don\u2019t have love for Krishna yet, but we understand that we should want it and we accept some discipline at this end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This Sadhana can be of two types: Vaidhi and Raganuga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Vaidhi is the process we practice, with all the rules and regulations, and is the process for us established by our Acaryas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Raganuga is another process, in which the uttama guru reveals to the disciple what is his nitya-svarupa (his eternal spiritual body) and teaches him how to act accordingly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Let\u2019s say you are a gopa in the spiritual world. Then you should start right now to dress as a cowherd boy, play as one etc. Let\u2019s say you are Sudama. He has love (raga) and you are taught how to \u201cgo\u201d (ga) to follow him (anu). Hence the word Raganuga.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Since spontaneous love is a natural characteristic of Sudama and all gopas, then you are trained to act in that way.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This is why Raganuga is called \u201cspontaneous devotional service\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">But this Raganuga is only in practice.
