Like a sister, freeing and protecting one from bad words and acts. It preserves the purity of ones varna, bringing strength for inhaling and exhaling breath. I have obtained this belt.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om ritasya goptri tapasah parasvi<br \/>\nghnati rakshah sahamana aratih<br \/>\nsa ma samantam abhiparyehi bhadre<br \/>\ndhartarah te mekhale ma rishama<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;This belt is the protector of truth, the greatest wealth of austerity, which prevents injury, and causes victory over enemies. O secret belt of fortune, please surround me completely. As your wearers may we not bring harm to you.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The acarya should take the sacred thread saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ngayatri chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nupanayane yajnopavita dane viniyogah<br \/>\nom yajnopavitam asi yajnasya tva yajnopavitena upanahyami<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;You are the sacred thread for sacrifice. I tie you with this thread for the purpose of performing sacrifices.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">He should place the thread on the child&#8217;s left shoulder and under the right arm saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ngayatri chandah <br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nupanayane manavakasya yajnopavitam paridhapane viniyogah<br \/>\nom yaMjnoMpaMviMtam paMraMmam paMvitram \/<br \/>\npraMjapa\u00c1teMr yat sa\u00c1haMjam puraMsta\u00c1t \/\/<br \/>\naMyuMshya\u00c1m agryaMm prati\u00c1munca shuMbhram \/<br \/>\nya\u00c1jnopaviMtam bala\u00c1m astu teja\u00c1h \/\/<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;The sacred thread is most pure, born at the time of the appearance of the Lord, long before. Put on this shining white thread bestowing long life. Let there be strength and energy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The acarya should place the deer skin in the child&#8217;s hands and make him say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">@footnote:<br \/>\nThe deer skin was of practical use in forest life. It was used by the brahmacari as an upper garment to keep the rain off, and as an asana to sit and meditate, as snakes would not disturb him as they dislike the subtle smell of the skin, and the hairs of the skin hurt their scales. Brahmanas would wear the skin of the black buck (which is non-different from Brahman), kshatriyas would wear the skin of a spotted antelope, and vaishyas would wear the skin of a goat. However, some texts substitute the animal skin for a new cloth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ntrishtup chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nupanayane manavakasya ajina paridhapane viniyogah<br \/>\nom mitrasya cakshuh dharunam baliyah<br \/>\ntejo yashasvi sthaviram samidham<br \/>\nanahanasyam vasanam jarishnu pari<br \/>\nidam vaji ajinam dadhe aham<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;I am giving you this deer skin, which is the light of the sun, the presiding Lord, strength, energy and fame, eternal and effulgent, chaste, giving valor, giving long life.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The child should put on the deer skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The child, folding his hands, should stand in front of the acarya and say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ngayatri chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nacarya mantrane viniyogah<br \/>\nom adhihi bhoh savitrim me bhavan anubravitu<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;Teach me, sir. Please recite to me the Gayatri mantra.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The acarya should make the child recite each phrase three times:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ngayatri chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nupanayane japopanayane viniyogah<br \/>\nom tat savituh varenyam (3x) <br \/>\nom bhargo devasya dhimahi (3x) <br \/>\nom dhiyo yo nah pracodayat(e) (3x) <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The acarya should make the child repeat the following two phrases three times each:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om tat savituh varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi (3x) om dhiyo yo nah pracodayat (3x) <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The acarya should make the child recite the full mantra three times:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om tat savituh varenyam<br \/>\nbhargo devasya dhimahi<br \/>\ndhiyo yo nah pracodayat (3x) <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The acarya should make the child recite each of the Mahavyahritis as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ngayatri chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nmaha-vyahrti pate viniyogah<br \/>\nom bhur om<br \/>\nom prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\nushnik chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nmaha-vyahrti pate viniyogah<br \/>\nom bhuvah om<br \/>\nom prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\nanushtup chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nmaha-vyahrti pate viniyogah<br \/>\nom svah om<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The acarya should make the child recite the Gayatri mantra with the Mahavyahritis three times:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ngayatri chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\njapopanayane viniyogah<br \/>\nom bhur bhuvah svah<br \/>\ntat savitur varenyam<br \/>\nbhargo devasy dhimahi<br \/>\ndhiyo yo nah pracodayat om (3x) <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Then the acarya should hand the child a stick of bilva or palasha wood and make him address the stick, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">@footnote:<br \/>\nThe danda is given for protection and for tending the spiritual master&#8217;s cattle. Symbolically it represents the symbol of a traveller, in other words, the brahmacari is a traveller on the road of spiritual life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The brahmana&#8217;s danda should measure up to his hairline, the kshatriya&#8217;s up to the place between eyebrows, and the vaishya&#8217;s up to the tip of his nose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The danda should be unbroken, unscratched and with bark. It should be straight, fine looking and not burnt by fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\npankti chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nupanayane manavaka dandarpane viniyogah<br \/>\nom sushravah sushravasam<br \/>\nma kuru yatha tvam sushravah<br \/>\nsushrava deveshu evam<br \/>\naham sushravah sushrava<br \/>\nbrahmaneshu bhuyasam<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;You, being glorious with knowledge, make me glorious with the same knowledge. O glorious one, as you are glorious among the devas, may I be glorious among the brahmanas.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Taking the danda the brahmacari should begin begging, by first going to his mother and saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om bhavati bhiksham dehi<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;Oh good woman, please give alms.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">@footnote:<br \/>\nIn the Dharma shastra it explains that<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">a brahmana will exclaim <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>&#8220;bhavati bhiksham dehi&#8221;, <br \/>\na kshatriya, &#8220;bhiksham dehi bhavati&#8221;, <br \/>\n<\/i>and <i>a vaishya, &#8220;dehi bhavati bhiksham&#8221;. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Receiving alms he should say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om svasti<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;May there be auspiciousness&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">In the same manner he should approach women friends of his mother and then thank them on receiving the alms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">He should then go to his father and say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om bhavan bhiksham dehi<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;Oh sir, please give alms.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">@footnote:<br \/>\nThe same manner of address will apply as said to the mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Receiving alms he should say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om svasti<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;May there be auspiciousness&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">He should approach friends of his father in the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">He should give all that he receives to the acarya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The acarya should perform Vyasta Samasta Mahavyahriti Homa and should offer ghee-soaked wood of pradesha length into the fire silently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">He should perform Shatyayana Homa, Vamadevya Ganam and the other rites of Udicya Karma. The father of the child should give dakshina to the initiated Vaishnavas and brahmanas. He should serve prasada to all the devotees and guests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The brahmacari should remain at the place of the homa silently until sunset. He should then perform Kushandika rites, drawing the lines and purifying then, establishing the fire and calling the fire called &#8220;Samudbhava.&#8221; He should fold his hands and say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om ihaivayam itaro jataveda<br \/>\ndevebhyo havyam vahatu prajanan<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;May this fire, all knowing Jataveda, carry the offering to the devatas.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">He should perform Udakanjali Seka and Agni-Paryukshana (see the section on Kushandika)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Taking three sticks of ghee-soaked wood of pradesha length, he should offer the first without mantra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The second he should offer saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ngayatri chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nagnau samidadhane viniyogah<br \/>\nom vishno agnaye samidham aharyam<br \/>\nvrihate jatavedase<br \/>\nyatha agnih samidha samidhyati<br \/>\nevam aham ayusha medhaya varcasa<br \/>\nprajaya pashubhih brahmavacasena<br \/>\ndhanena annadyena samedhishiya svaha <br \/>\nidam vishnave idam na mamav<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;I have brought the wood of the great fire, the knower of all living entities.
