He should sprinkle the kusha with ghee three times, on the tips, middle portion and root portion, reciting the following mantra each time:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\ngayatri chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\ndarbha-trna-bhyajane viniyogah<br \/>\nom aktam rihana vyantu vayah<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;May this sprinkling of ghee produce blessings.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Holding the kusha in his left hand, he should then sprinkle the kusha grass with water and throw into the fire using his right hand, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\nanushtupa chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\ndarbha-jutika-homa viniyogah<br \/>\nom bho vaishnavanam-adhipate vishno<br \/>\nrudrah tanticaro vrisha<br \/>\npashun asmakam ma himsit<br \/>\netad astu hutam tava svaha<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;Oh Vishnu, Lord of the devotees, let this be an offering to you so that Rudra, who wanders near the tied up cows, does not harm our animals.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Purna Ahuti (final offering):<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Standing up he should make the final offering of mahaprasadam, cloth, thread, gandha, garland, sandalwood, flowers, fruit, and betel, into the fire saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\nvirad gayatri chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnuh devata<br \/>\nvishnu-dasya yashaskamasya yajaniya-prayoge viniyogah<br \/>\nom purna homam yashase vishnave juhomi<br \/>\nyah asmai vishnave juhomi<br \/>\nsa varam asmai dadati<br \/>\nvishnoh varam vrine<br \/>\nyashasa bhami loke svaha<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;I make this final offering to Vishnu, who is fame. Whoever makes an offering to Vishnu gives the most select items as offering. I choose the best for Vishnu. May my stay in this world lead to glory.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Shanti Dana (sprinkling prokshana water over the fire):<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The hotri should go around the fire and release the knot from the kusha grass brahma, then return to his seat. He is our helper, constantly expanding. He is our eternal friend. He displays this through His wonderful activites. You are the worshippable absolute truth and the source of all pleasurable experience. Being strong, You break the opposition of the foes. You are the protector of those who sing Your praises. You are affectionate to those who accept You as a friend. Be with us a hundred times, to give us protection, O .&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om svasti no govindah<br \/>\nsvasti no &#8216;cyutanantau <br \/>\nsvasti no vasudevo vishnur dadhatu<br \/>\nsvasti no narayano naro vai<br \/>\nsvasti nah padmanabhah purushottamo dadhatu<br \/>\nsvasti no vishvakseno vishveshvarah<br \/>\nsvasti no hrishikesho harir dadhatu<br \/>\nsvasti no vainateyo harih<br \/>\nsvasti no &#8216;njanasuto hanur bhagavato dadhatu<br \/>\nsvasti svasti sumangalai kesho mahan<br \/>\nshri krishnah saccidananda ghanah sarveshvareshvaro dadhatu<br \/>\nom dyauh shantih<br \/>\nantarikshag\u00af shantih<br \/>\nprithivi shantih<br \/>\napah shantih<br \/>\nvayuh shantih<br \/>\ntejah shantih<br \/>\noshadhayah shantih<br \/>\nlokah shantih<br \/>\nbrahmana shantih<br \/>\nvaishnava shantih<br \/>\nshantir astu dhritir astu<br \/>\nom shantih om shantih om shantih<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;May there be peace in the heavenly planets, in the ether, on the earth, in the water, in the air, in the light, in the herbs, in all the planetary systems, with the brahmanas, with the Vaishnavas. Let there be peace, let there be satisfaction.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">He should give dakshina to the Vaishnavas that have pancaratrika initiation and to the brahmanas present, according to his ability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The hotri should chant the acchidra-vacana and vaigunyasamadana (to allay any faults)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">To the best of his abilitiy, he should serve all the elevated Vaishnavas and other living entities with great care. The devotees should perform Krishna-samkirtana as nicely as possible. The groom should pay dandavatas to all. This is the udicya karma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">This ends the Vivaha rites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Garbhadhanam<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">(Impregnation):<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">In the morning, the husband after performing acamana and his daily sandhya rites should chant the Purusha Sukta and according to the scriptural rules, worship Lord Narayana and His Vaishnava parshadas. That same evening at an auspicious time, he should mix cow-urine, mud and water and smear it on the ground. He should face a Deity of the Lord or Shri Shalagrama and after reciting the Vishnu Smaranam and Svasti Vacanam, he should offer an arghya1 to the Shalagrama or the Deity of the house in a conch or earthen vessel five times with the following mantras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om jagannatha mahabaho<br \/>\nsarvopadrava nashana<br \/>\nnava pushpotsave me&#8217;rghyam<br \/>\ngrihana jagadishvara<br \/>\netad-arghyam &#8211; om shri vishnave namah<br \/>\nom narayana hare rama<br \/>\ngovinda garuda-dhvaja<br \/>\nnavapushpotsve me &#8216;rghyam <br \/>\ngrihana parameshvara<br \/>\netad-arghyam &#8211; om shri vishnave namah<br \/>\nom dinabandho kripa sindho<br \/>\nparamananda madhava<br \/>\nnavapushpotsave me&#8217;rghyam<br \/>\ngrihana madhusudana<br \/>\netad-arghyam &#8211; om shri vishnave namah<br \/>\nom vishvatman vishvabandho<br \/>\nvishvesha vishvalocana<br \/>\nnavapushpotsave me&#8217;rghyam<br \/>\ngrihana syamasundara<br \/>\netad-arghyam &#8211; om shri vishnave namah<br \/>\nom cidananda hrishikesha<br \/>\nbhaktavashya janardana<br \/>\nnavapushpotsave me&#8217;rghyam<br \/>\ngrihana kamalapate<br \/>\netad-arghyam &#8211; om shri vishnave namah<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;Oh Supreme Lord, at this festive occasion with fresh flowers please accept the arghya offered by me.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">With the worship of Lord Vishnu and the Vaishnavas completed, he should procede to the place where he will unite with his wife. Before offering the arghya, or just before the act of union, the husband should be clean and decorated with sandalwood pulp and wearing nice cloth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">The husband facing East, should situate himself behind his seated wife. With his right hand reaching over her right shoulder he should touch her yoni saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\nanushtup chandah<br \/>\nshri vishnu acyuta hari jagadisha devata<br \/>\ngarbhadhane viniyogah<br \/>\nom vishnuh yonim kalpayatu<br \/>\nacyuto rupani pimshatu<br \/>\nasincatu harih garbham<br \/>\njagadisho dadhatu te<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;May Vishnu prepare the yoni; may Acyuta fashion the forms; may Hari carry out the fertilization; may Jagadisha present the child to you.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om prajapatih vishnu rishih<br \/>\nanushtup chandah<br \/>\nshri garbhodashayi nara-narayano devata<br \/>\ngarbhadhane viniyogah<br \/>\nom garbham dhehi garbhodashayin garbham te naranarayanau<br \/>\nadhattam pushkara srajau<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;Garbhodashayi Vishnu please bestow the child; Nara-Narayana, bedecked with lotus garlands, please give her the child.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Touching her navel he should say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\"><i>om dirghayusham krishna bhaktam<br \/>\nputram janaya suvrate<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">&#8220;Oh virtuous wife, bear a long-living son, a devotee of Krishna.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Then they should unite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">This is the Garbhadhana rite according to the followers of the Sama Veda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">Pumsavana<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">(Rite for making a male child)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">In the case of a first pregnancy this rite should be performed during the third month of pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 16px\">@FOOTNOTE:<br \/>\nIt may be performed later for other pregnancies, when the signs of pregnancy begin to show. Manu says that it should be performed when the foetus begins to move in the womb. Some commentators say the rite should be performed on the first pregnancy only, and not during the following pregnancies. It should be performed when the moon is in a male constellation.
