Sheshanaga<\/a> is also considered a dasa<\/a> (servant) as well as also a manifestation<\/a>, or avatar<\/a>, of Lord<\/a> Maha<\/a> Vishnu<\/a> himself. Ananta Sheshanaga<\/a> is said to have descended to Earth<\/a> in four human<\/a> forms<\/a> or avatars<\/a>: Lakshmana<\/a>, brother of Lord<\/a> Sri Rama<\/a>, Balarama<\/a>, brother of Lord<\/a> Sri<\/a> Krishna<\/a>, Ramanuja<\/a> and Manavala Mamunigal<\/a>. Maharsi<\/a> Patanjali’s<\/a> the major compiler of yogic<\/a> traditions<\/a> is also considered to be an incarnation<\/a> of the great Shesha<\/a>.<\/p>\n Shesha<\/a> is generally depicted with a massive form<\/a> that floats coiled in space<\/a>, or on the ocean of milk<\/a>, to form<\/a> the bed on which Vishnu<\/a> lies. Sometimes he is shown as five-headed or seven-headed, but more commonly as a many thousand-headed serpent<\/a>, sometimes with each head<\/a> wearing an ornate crown<\/a>.<\/p>\n His name<\/a> means “that which remains<\/a>“, from the Sanskrit<\/a> root<\/a> \u015bi\u1e63, because when the world<\/a> is destroyed at the end of the kalpa<\/a>, Shesha<\/a> remains<\/a> as he is.<\/p>\n In the Bhagavadgita<\/a> of Chapter<\/a> 10, verse 29, Sri<\/a> Krishna<\/a> while describing 75 of his common manifestations<\/a>, declares, “ananta\u015b ca asmi n\u0101g\u0101n\u0101\u1e41”: Of the nagas<\/a>, I am Ananta<\/a>.<\/p>\n As per the Mahabharata<\/a>, Shesha<\/a> was born to sage<\/a> Ka\u015byapa<\/a> and his wife Kadru<\/a>. Kadru<\/a> gave birth<\/a> to a thousand snakes<\/a>, of which Shesha<\/a> was the eldest. After Shesha<\/a>, were born V\u0101suki<\/a>, Air\u0101vata<\/a> and Tak\u1e63aka<\/a>, in order<\/a>. A lot of \u015ae\u1e63a\u2019s brothers were cruel<\/a> in nature<\/a> and were bent upon inflicting harm<\/a> on others. They were even unkind to Garuda<\/a>, who was Ka\u015byapa\u2019s<\/a> son through Vinatha<\/a>, sister of Kadru<\/a>. (Kadru<\/a> and Vinatha<\/a> were daughters of Daksha<\/a>). \u015ae\u1e63a, disgusted by the cruel<\/a> acts of his brothers, left his mother and kin, and took to austere penances. He lived on air<\/a>, and meditated<\/a> in various places including Gandhamadhana<\/a>, Badrik\u0101shrama<\/a>, Gokarna<\/a>, Pushkara<\/a> and Himalayas<\/a>. His penances were so severe that his flesh, skin<\/a> and muscles<\/a> dried up and merged with his frame. Brahm\u0101<\/a>, convinced of his \u015ae\u1e63a’s will, asked \u015ae\u1e63a to request a boon. Shesha<\/a> asked that he be able<\/a> to keep his mind<\/a> under control so that he could continue to perform ascetic<\/a> penances. Brahm\u0101<\/a> gladly accepted the request. Brahma<\/a> then asked a favour of \u015ae\u1e63a, that of to go beneath the unstable earth<\/a> and stabilize it. \u015ae\u1e63a agreed and went to the netherworld<\/a>, and stabilized her with his hood. He is known to support her even today, thus making P\u0101tala his perennial<\/a> residence. (Mbh, \u0100di Parva<\/a>) Maha<\/a> Vishnu<\/a> and Maha<\/a>Lakshmi<\/a><\/p>\n Shesha<\/a> is also depicted as floating in the ocean of the changing world<\/a>, forming the bed of Maha<\/a> Vishnu<\/a>. He is also known as Adishesha<\/a> (the foremost of snakes<\/a>) because of<\/a> this and Anantashesha<\/a> or simply Ananta<\/a> (endless<\/a>, as he is known to remain in existence<\/a>even after the end of the Kalpa<\/a>, when the whole universe<\/a> is destroyed).<\/p>\n Balar\u0101ma<\/a>, Lak\u1e63ma\u1e47a<\/a>, R\u0101m\u0101nuja<\/a>, Manavala Mamunigal<\/a>, and Nity\u0101nanda Prabhu<\/a>, are considered avatar\u0101 of \u015ae\u1e63an\u0101ga<\/a> (or vice versa). Do you know what happened to his step brother Sesha<\/a>, the son of Kadru<\/a>….?<\/p>\n Read on…<\/p>\n The story of Sesha<\/a> starts with the rivalry between his mother Kadru<\/a> and step mother Vinata<\/a>. Kadru<\/a>, the daughter of King<\/a> Daksha<\/a>, the wife of Sage<\/a> Kashyap<\/a> and the mother of the Snakes<\/a> looked at her sons. ‘Sons! I want a favour from you!’ She wringed her hands as she looked at them, partly in desperation. ‘You are the only ones who can help me now!’ Sesha<\/a> sighed. He could never understand why his mother had to be so melodramatic. ‘What has happened mother?’ He asked. Her mother looked even more unhappy<\/a> as she said. ‘I….I am scared!’<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> looked at his younger brothers who were also trying to hide their exasperation at their mother. He wondered what she had done this time<\/a>…. Kadru<\/a> spoke after some time<\/a>. ‘Yesterday me and Vinata<\/a> crossed the ocean and went to the other side….There we saw Ucchashravas<\/a>, the flying horse<\/a>!’ Sesha<\/a> did not miss the fact that his mother spoke about Vinata<\/a> with such disdain. He could not understand how Kadru<\/a> could not like her own sister…… Sesha<\/a> remembered how Kadru<\/a> and Vinata<\/a> had always been like this….as far as he could remember.<\/p>\n From the stories he had heard, Sesha<\/a> came to know that his father Sage<\/a> Kashyap<\/a> had once wanted to perform a sacrifice<\/a> for more offspring. Just before the yagna<\/a>, Sage<\/a> Kashyap<\/a> had first asked Kadru<\/a> about the offspring she wanted. Delighted<\/a> at being the first one to choose, Kadru<\/a> had asked for a thousand powerful Snakes<\/a> as her sons. The sage<\/a> granted her wish and turned to Vinata<\/a>.<\/p>\n Vinata<\/a> is her usual soft manner<\/a> had asked for just two sons…..who were more powerful than the thousand sons of Kadru<\/a>….<\/p>\n Furious<\/a> at being bested by her sister, Kadru<\/a> started looking at Vinata<\/a> as an enemy….<\/p>\n Kadru<\/a> had her thousand sons and Sesha<\/a> was the eldest son of Kadru<\/a>. Unfortunately Vinata’s<\/a> eggs for some reason<\/a> took longer time<\/a> to hatch. In her anxiety<\/a>, Vinata<\/a> hastily broke one of the egg….Vinata<\/a> was devastated to find that the child inside the egg was only half formed…. Sesha<\/a> came to know that the half formed child \u2013 Aruna<\/a> cursed her mother to serve another person<\/a> for her hasty act and disappeared from there. Though Aruna<\/a> was only half formed, Sesha<\/a> immensely respected Aruna<\/a>. Aruna<\/a> was now the charioteer of the Sun<\/a> Lord<\/a> – Surya<\/a>….<\/p>\n It is believed in Hindu<\/a> Mythology<\/a>, that the sun<\/a> appears purplish in the morning and the evening because of the presence of Aruna<\/a> as Surya’s<\/a> charioteer. In course of time<\/a>, Sesha<\/a> realized<\/a> that most of his brothers generally caused<\/a> misery<\/a> to everyone… Closer home, Sesha<\/a> was now appalled by the behaviour<\/a> of his mother towards Vinata<\/a>. Kadru<\/a> treated Vinata<\/a> as her enemy and following suit Sesha’s brothers also hated Vinata<\/a>….And now Vinata<\/a> was all alone with no one to comfort<\/a> her. The other egg had not yet hatched and she was probably racked with guilt<\/a> and fear<\/a> about what she had done to the first egg….Sesha shook his head….And now his mother was afraid about something she had done with Vinata<\/a>….<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> turned his attention<\/a> to his mother as she started speaking<\/a>. ‘We saw Ucchashravas<\/a>….it was a beautiful horse….At that time<\/a>….’ Kadru<\/a> swallowed as she looked sheepish and continued, ‘….I placed a bet!’ Sesha<\/a> looked at his mother in surprise as she continued. ‘….I told Vinata<\/a> that she had to tell me the colour<\/a> of the horse<\/a>….’ Kadru<\/a> frowned as she thought<\/a> and continued, ‘….Vinata<\/a> said immediately that it was fully white in colour<\/a>…’ Kadru<\/a> shook her head dubiously….’I think….I thought….I thought<\/a> that the horse<\/a>had a black tail and I said so….’<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> looked resignedly at his mother, ‘What was the bet you placed mother?’<\/p>\n Kadru<\/a> could not meet the eyes<\/a> of her son. She looked at the floor and mumbled. ‘I said that whoever lost the bet…..would have to serve the other….’ Sesha<\/a> resisted the urge<\/a> to hit his head in exasperation. He could collectively feel<\/a> his brothers’s temper increasing. His brother Vasuki<\/a> spoke with barely controlled anger<\/a>. ‘Mother….you still have not told us, what favour you want from us?’<\/p>\n ‘Now….Now….now that I think about it….I think…I think…’ Kadru<\/a> mumbled barely able<\/a> to get the words out. ‘I think that…I may be wrong….I think that….that….the horse<\/a> was fully white….’ Kadru<\/a> looked almost mortified as she turned her attention<\/a> to her sons looking anguished. ‘I can’t bear the thought<\/a> of serving Vinata<\/a>…’ Kadru<\/a> said with tears<\/a> in her eyes<\/a>, ‘I would rather die<\/a> first!’ Kadru<\/a> spat out angrily. She eyed her sons angrily. ‘And so I want your help to make me win my bet!’ All the snakes<\/a> looked at their mother stumped. Vasuki<\/a> recovered first. He whispered softly. ‘What do you want us to do, mother?’<\/p>\n ‘I want you to wrap yourselves around Ucchashravas’s<\/a> tail…’ Kadru<\/a> said with a steely glint in her eyes<\/a>. ‘So that tomorrow when we go there to check the horse….the tail will appear black and I will win the bet!’ Kadru<\/a> said with a wicked smile<\/a> in her face.<\/p>\n ‘MOTHER!’ Sesha<\/a> looked at her mother appalled. ‘What are you saying? How can you even….?’ Sesha<\/a> fumbled unable to go on. Sesha<\/a> suddenly looked around and realized<\/a> that none of his brothers were speaking<\/a>. They were looking at Sesha<\/a> and their mother…afraid…afraid of the furious<\/a> temper of their mother….Suddenly Sesha<\/a> despised his brothers….and himself. Deep down he probably realised that his brothers did not even know that what their mother was asking them to do was wrong….Sesha angrily looked at his silent<\/a> brothers and turned to look at his mother and said angrily, ‘Mother! Do you even realize what you are saying?’ Sesha<\/a> said trying to control his temper.<\/p>\n Kadru<\/a> looked at all her sons, her temples<\/a> throbbing furiously. ‘I AM YOUR MOTHER!’ She shrieked angrily. ‘You will obey whatever I say…’Kadru said her voice<\/a> dropping dangerously. Vasuki<\/a> avoided looking at Sesha<\/a>. He knew that his elder brother was now more worried about doing the right thing…..Vasuki however had more realistic<\/a> problems…He knew that his mother was now in a dangerous<\/a> mood….She had to be calmed…before anything else…..Vasuki<\/a> realised that he had to be diplomatic with his mother. ‘Mother!’ He said in a calming<\/a> tone. Unfortunately for Vasuki<\/a> and the other snakes<\/a>, Vasuki<\/a> had hesitated too long….<\/p>\n As Kadru<\/a> heard Vasuki’s voice<\/a> she felt that her sons would not listen to her…..Her! Their own mother….they were willing to actually let her lose the bet and let her serve Vinata<\/a>…. ‘HOW DARE YOU?’ Kadru<\/a> shouted. ‘You are willing to let me be some….someone’s servant….Look at you!’ Kadru<\/a> said with disgust<\/a>, ‘Having sons like you…it is better…..that I did not have any children…I CURSE YOU!’ Kadru<\/a> yelled, ‘I am cursing that you would die<\/a> in a Snake<\/a> Sacrifice<\/a>….’ Kadru<\/a> finished breathing<\/a> angrily.<\/p>\n The entire room felt silent<\/a>. Even the air<\/a> grew quiet in the room. The snakes<\/a> were staring dumbfolded at each other. Their mother…..their own mother had unthinkingly cursed them…. For a long time<\/a> no one spoke. Kadru<\/a> sat in the throne<\/a> unapologetically as she looked at her sons breathing<\/a> triumphantly.<\/p>\n Vasuki<\/a> realised with utter incredulity that his mother had hastily consigned all of them to their doom….Vasuki took a deep breath<\/a>. He had to make his mother take back her curse…. ‘Mother! We will do what you want!’ He turned to his brothers, studiously avoiding Sesha<\/a>. ‘We will all do what our mother wants, won’t we?’<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> turned to see that slowly one by one, his brothers nodded their heads…Fools! You think that merely because you will listen to her now, she will take back her words….No! Sesha<\/a> studied the haughty features of his mother. What she said will come to pass and no power of earth<\/a> can stop it….Sesha took in a deep breath<\/a>. He was feeling<\/a> a sense<\/a> of detachment<\/a> as he looked at his brothers and his mother…We were all going to die<\/a> because of my mother’s unthinking words….<\/p>\n Needless to say, the next day, all the snakes<\/a> other than Sesha<\/a> wrapped themselves around Ucchashravas<\/a>‘s tail. So when the two sisters went to check the horse<\/a>, Vinata<\/a> lost the bet and Sesha<\/a> realized<\/a> that Vinata’s<\/a> first son \u2013 Aruna’s curse to his mother had come true….Vinata<\/a> was now the servant of Kadru<\/a>.<\/p>\n As days passed on, Sesha<\/a> grew more and more disillusioned with the behaviour<\/a> of his mother towards Vinata<\/a>. To please their mother, Sesha’s brothers also behaved very badly towards Vinata<\/a>. Sesha<\/a> could not believe it, but the Snakes<\/a> were bad even towards Garuda<\/a> \u2013 the second son of Vinata<\/a>….<\/p>\n Finally Sesha<\/a> could take it no more…He left his family and severed all links with them. He never wanted to go back to them or become like them.<\/p>\n He had probably committed some great sin<\/a> because of which he had undergone all these things….He would have to purify<\/a> himself….He would perform penance. He would meditate….And so Sesha<\/a> meditated….Sesha meditated<\/a> so deeply that he forgot all about himself. He was lost in the Brahman<\/a> [The Force which runs within us all] for days together. Sesha<\/a> gave up eating and drinking…..His penance continued….Finally Lord Brahma<\/a> appeared before him. ‘Anantha! Sesha<\/a>! Open your eyes<\/a>!’<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> opened his eyes<\/a> and saw the four headed Brahma<\/a> stand before him with a kind smile<\/a> in his face. ‘Anantha! My son! Why are you performing such a difficult penance? What do you want?’<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> felt a wave of pure<\/a> white light<\/a> wash through him as he stood before the Lord Brahma<\/a>. ‘My Lord<\/a>! I….I….’ Sesha<\/a> felt embarrassed…How could he tell the Lord<\/a>, that he was embarrassed of what he was….He looked quietly not able<\/a> to speak. Lord Brahma<\/a>probably divined Sesha’s thoughts<\/a>. He smiled and shook his head. ‘Sesha<\/a>! Listen to me, please do not be unhappy<\/a> of what you are….’ Lord Brahma<\/a> looked at Sesha<\/a> with a quiet smile<\/a>. ‘There is nothing to be ashamed of what you are…And you my son, are someone who has a special purpose<\/a>…..’<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> mumbled. ‘I am a snake<\/a>! My brothers, they bite people<\/a> and cause<\/a> untold misery<\/a> to everyone….We bear the curse of our own mother….And yet, you come here and tell me that….’ Sesha<\/a> said drily, ‘….I should not be ashamed of what I am!’<\/p>\n Lord Brahma<\/a> smiled. ‘That curse of your mother, would not affect all of you….’ Lord Brahma<\/a> looked sad<\/a>. ‘She spoke foolishly, without pausing to think of the effect of her words….’ Lord Brahma<\/a> shook his head as he continued. ‘However, her curse would affect only those of your brothers who have caused<\/a> suffering<\/a> to others….not to all the snakes<\/a>…’ Lord Brahma<\/a> looked at Sesha<\/a> and smiled. ‘And you my dear Sesha<\/a>, as I was saying, are meant for great things!’<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> looked at Lord Brahma<\/a> without understanding<\/a>. Lord Brahma<\/a> nodded as he continued. ‘Yes Anantha!’ Lord Brahma<\/a> nodded around him. ‘You will be the one to hold up the earth<\/a>….’ Sesha<\/a> blinked wondering whether he had heard right. Lord Brahma<\/a>continued. ‘….The earth<\/a> is not stable<\/a> now….It needs someone to support it…..Someone to hold it up….’ Lord Brahma<\/a> said looking pointedly at Sesha<\/a>.<\/p>\n ‘Me?’ Sesha<\/a> looked flabbergasted. Was Lord Brahma<\/a> really trusting him with such an important thing? Sesha<\/a> was looking at Lord Brahma<\/a> without understanding<\/a> as Lord Brahma<\/a> continued. ‘Yes Anantha! You will provide the stability required for the earth<\/a>! In fact you are going to be the one who is holding her together!’ Sesha<\/a> blinked at the words of Lord Brahma<\/a>. He was numb….He was finding it difficult to believe that Lord Brahma<\/a> was trusting him with such an important task. Lord Brahma<\/a> smiled. He was not done with the snake<\/a> yet. He continued. ‘There is one more thing you will do as part of this job!’ Sesha<\/a> was looking baffled as Lord Brahma<\/a> continued, ‘You will be the resting place of Lord<\/a> Vishnu<\/a> at Vaikunta<\/a>! You will be with Lord<\/a> Vishnu<\/a>!’<\/p>\n Sesha<\/a> looked at Lord Brahma<\/a> unable to believe what he had heard….Had the Lord<\/a> just blessed him to be with the Dark Lord<\/a>? Could he – Sesha<\/a>, a Snake<\/a>, really be blessed with such a fortune<\/a> to be with the Dark Lord….together for all eternity<\/a>….<\/p>\n As the words of Lord Brahma<\/a> washed over Sesha<\/a>, he felt a strange bliss<\/a> come over him. He knew that nothing could hurt him now….not his brothers or his mother’s words….Nothing. He was going to be one with Lord<\/a> Vishnu….Sesha realized<\/a> that he wanted nothing more….He had got everything he wanted….. And so it is believed in Hindu<\/a> mythology<\/a>, that Lord<\/a> Vishnu<\/a> rests on Sesha<\/a>, the thousand headed snake<\/a> as Sesha<\/a> holds up the earth<\/a> on his head. Kadru’s curse on the other snakes<\/a> also unfortunately came true….Many snakes<\/a> were killed by Garuda<\/a>, the second son of Vinata<\/a>, whom they had mistreated when they had been kids.
