That night there will be R\u0101sa-l\u012bl\u0101 and \u015aayan l\u012bl\u0101 (taking rest) in her Kunja. The same thing happens on A\u1e63\u1e6dam\u012b (the eight lunar day) in the Kunja of \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 and Vi\u015b\u0101kh\u0101, on Navam\u012b (the ninth day) in the Kunja of Campakalat\u0101, on Ek\u0101da\u015b\u012b in the Kunja of Indurekh\u0101, on P\u016br\u1e47im\u0101 (fullmoon night) in the Kunja of Rangadev\u012b and Sudev\u012b and on the third bright lunar day in \u0100\u015bvina in the Kunja of Citr\u0101 Sakh\u012b.]\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two days before R\u0101dh\u0101\u1e63\u1e6dam\u012b, on the sixth day of the light quarter of the month of Bh\u0101dra, father V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu sends an invitation to Nanda Mah\u0101r\u0101ja (K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s father) at Nand\u012b\u015bvara to come and celebrate \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101\u2019s birthday. \u015ar\u012bd\u0101ma, \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101\u2019s elder brother, and \u1e5a\u1e63ikany\u0101 deliver the invitation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next day, after performing their daily morning-duties, Nanda Mah\u0101r\u0101ja and his entire entourage, including Go\u1e63\u1e6dha Candra \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, come to V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nupura (Var\u1e63\u0101n\u0101) on foot, with bullock-carts or in palanquins. Hearing the musical instruments of their approaching guests resounding, V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu Mah\u0101r\u0101ja and his brothers and Mother K\u012brtid\u0101 and her sisters-in-law are awaiting them. They show the guests their quarters and take a meal with them. \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 and Her Y\u016bthe\u015bvar\u012bs (group-leaders) cook rice, vegetables, pur\u012bs, k\u1e63\u012bra (sweet rice) and many other delicious dishes, and the p\u016bj\u0101r\u012b offers everything to Mah\u0101r\u0101ja V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu\u2019s N\u0101r\u0101ya\u1e47a-deity. After the p\u016bj\u0101r\u012b puts the deity to rest \u015ar\u012bd\u0101ma arranges for pras\u0101da to be served on the courtyard of the palace and \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 starts quarreling with Her Y\u016bthe\u015bvar\u012bs about who can serve first. Externally angry \u015ay\u0101m\u0101-sakh\u012b says to \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101: \u201cIt\u2019s Your father\u2019s invitation! What\u2019s it to us? You can serve first or not, whatever You like!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hearing this loving quarrel Mother K\u012brtid\u0101 decides to make lines for serving, and every sakh\u012b can serve her own line of guests. After eating, chewing betelleaves and washing the mouth, everyone lies down in his own guestroom. On the pretext of picking flowers \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 then goes to Vil\u0101sa Ku\u1e47\u1e0da, which is situated west of Vars\u0101n\u0101, where She secretly meets \u015ar\u012b \u015ay\u0101masundara. After a brief meeting everyone returns to their own rooms. Then \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 cooks something and takes that along for Her usual noontime meeting with K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a at \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101ku\u1e47\u1e0da.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the morning of R\u0101dh\u0101\u1e63\u1e6dam\u012b-day, after performing their morning-duties, everyone assembles to witness \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101\u2019s abhi\u1e63eka (bathing ceremony). \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 wears a thin, white dress along with all Her usual ornaments for the abhi\u1e63eka. Musicians start playing their instruments (like V\u012b\u1e47\u0101, Up\u0101\u1e45ga, Pakhow\u0101j, M\u1e5bda\u1e45ga, Dundubh\u012bs, Bher\u012bs and Dolaks) and the maidservants come in to bring all the paraphernalia for the bathing-ceremony. Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b-dev\u012b chants the mantras and Garg\u012b (the daughter of the priest Gargamuni) starts the abhi\u1e63eka. First she pours Mahau\u1e63adhi-water, water that contains many auspicious herbs, over \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101\u2019s delectable limbs, then Pa\u00efca-Gavya, five kinds of dairy-products, like milk, yoghurt, buttermilk, clarified butter and cow\u2019s urine, then a hundred jugs of clear water and finally She bathes Her with a conchshell that makes a thousand streams. The maidservants dry \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 off with soft white towels and anoint Her with fragrant oils and Catu\u1e25-Sama (a blend of sandalpaste, vermilion, camphor and musk). Then they take Her to Her \u015a\u1e5b\u1e45g\u0101ra Ved\u012b (dais for ornamentation), dress Her in Her usual splendid blue s\u0101r\u012b and decorate Her with Her shimmering ornaments, the sixteen \u015b\u1e5b\u1e45g\u0101ras and twelve \u0101bhara\u1e47as. Garg\u012b worships \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 with D\u016brva-grass (bright green grass which is highly auspicious) and wheat in her hand, and Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b offers Her brahminical blessings. After a maidservant has offered \u0101rati to \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101, mother Ya\u015bod\u0101 blesses Her and presents Her with a jeweled necklace, clothes and ornaments. She also gives such presents to the Y\u016bthe\u015bvar\u012bs. Then \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 gives ornamented cows in charity. Father V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu also gives thousands of cows and calves. \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 offers Her obeisances unto all these superiors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After this \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and His friends take a snack and \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 and Her girlfriends and groupleaders also take a snack. \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 then takes off Her ornaments and cooks Her own birthday-feast together with mother Rohi\u1e47\u012b \u2013 sweet rice, savouries, rice and vegetables. Hundreds of br\u0101hma\u1e47as are cooking another feast for all the villagers outside. Compassionate Ya\u015bod\u0101 says to her friend K\u012brtid\u0101: \u201cSakhi! Your heart is so hard! You make \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101, who is as tender as a \u015air\u012b\u1e63a-flower, cook so much! You don\u2019t have any love and affection! Just see how warm She feels of this hard labour on Her very birthday!\u201d Mother K\u012brtid\u0101 replies: \u201cBecause \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 got the blessing that whatever She cooks would be more delicious than nectar, V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu-Mah\u0101r\u0101ja wanted Nanda Mah\u0101r\u0101ja and his family to savour this once. That\u2019s why \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 is cooking on this special occasion! O Queen of Vraja! Just see how nice Her preparations are!\u201d Mother Rohi\u1e47\u012b then shows mother Ya\u015bod\u0101 all the preparations \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 had cooked. \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 offers Her obeisances unto Queen Ya\u015bod\u0101\u2019s feet and Ya\u015bod\u0101 blesses Her, saying: \u201cO R\u0101dhe! Your preparations please my eyes with their form and my nose with their fragrance!\u201d Then Lalit\u0101 and \u015ay\u0101mal\u0101 come and offer their obeisances to mother Ya\u015bod\u0101\u2019s lotus feet and she then also affectionately praises and blesses them. Mother Rohi\u1e47\u012b then says: \u201cO K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a-Janani, mother of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a! This \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 is a golden gem and \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is a sapphire gem-stone! They are just like a couple of necklaces for the Vraja-Lak\u1e63m\u012b (the goddess of Vraja\u2019s pastoral beauty)!\u201d \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101\u2019s nostrils bloom of shyness when She hears this. When Lalit\u0101 and the other sakh\u012bs see this they rejoice. \u015ar\u012b Ya\u015bod\u0101 then orders some maidservants to prepare the offering for the deities and to fan \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 to remove Her fatigue. After this the p\u016bj\u0101r\u012b offers the bhoga and puts the deities to rest. (Meanwhile outside hundreds of brahmins have also completed their enormous cooking work) After this everyone dresses properly and, like on K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a-Janm\u0101\u1e63\u1e6dam\u012b in P\u0101van Sarovara, proceed to Bh\u0101nukhora, the pond that lies east of Vars\u0101n\u0101, to play Dadhik\u0101d\u0101, a game of throwing butter, yoghurt and other dairy-products at each other, and splashing each other with water from different corners of the Khora \u2013 one gh\u0101\u1e6da (bathing place) is reserved for men, one for women, one for girls and one for boys. After this Mah\u0101r\u0101ja V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu and K\u012brtid\u0101 Mah\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b present all ladies and gentlemen present with proper gifts of clothes and ornaments. V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu Mah\u0101r\u0101ja first sumptuously feeds all the br\u0101hma\u1e47as and then all other people, on a large courtyard. Everyone eats in supreme ecstasy, and after flushing their mouths they take betelleaves and take rest in their individual abodes.<\/p>\n<p>In the inner chambers of the palace mother K\u012brtid\u0101 and mother \u015ar\u012b Ya\u015bod\u0101 also feed all the ladies, after which they too take rest in their individual quarters. After this he generously gives clothes, ornaments and dak\u1e63i\u1e47\u0101 (monetary donations). Then everyone takes rest in their own rooms.<\/p>\n<p>After taking some rest \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 goes picking flowers with Her girlfriends on the bank of Vil\u0101sa Kunda in the west of Barsana. While they depart the sakh\u012bs give a hint to \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a through the window. \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a then joins them at Vil\u0101sa Ku\u1e47\u1e0da, performs His amorous pastimes with \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 there, performs Yogap\u012b\u1e6dha pastimes and then everyone returns to their own bedroom for taking some rest. After this \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s pastimes of cooking offerings for the Sun-god and going on abhis\u0101ra are the same as on the Saptam\u012b. At night They dance the R\u0101sa and recline in the ku\u00efja of Vi\u015b\u0101kh\u0101-sakh\u012b, because it is also her birthday on this day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NAVAM\u012a L\u012aL\u0100 :<\/p>\n<p>NANDA AND OTHERS TAKE LEAVE<\/p>\n<p>In V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nupura on the ninth day of the lunar fortnight in the month of Bh\u0101dra \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101, \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and everyone else take their morning baths, bathe, dress, ornament and then take a snack. After that, after \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 and Her assistants have completed their cooking work and the offering is done to the deities, everyone takes their meal in due order and take rest. As in the previous day \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101-K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a perform Yogap\u012b\u1e6dha-pastimes and Their various other eternal pastimes such as wandering through the forest. Then, in the afternoon they return to Barsana where they all have a snack in due course. After that \u015ar\u012b Nanda Mah\u0101r\u0101ja and others take leave from \u015ar\u012b V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu Mah\u0101r\u0101ja in order to return home. Just like Nanda Mah\u0101r\u0101ja did on \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a Janm\u0101\u1e63\u1e6dam\u012b, \u015ar\u012b V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu Mah\u0101r\u0101ja is bidding everyone goodbye after offering them suitable presents. Everyone then returns home in topmost bliss.<\/p>\n<p>After this \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s cow-milking pastimes and others take place as usual. On this Navam\u012b-tithi the R\u0101sa- and \u015aayana-l\u012bl\u0101 take place at R\u0101dh\u0101ku\u1e47\u1e0da in the ku\u00efja of Campakalat\u0101-sakh\u012b on the occasion of her birthday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u015aR\u012a-R\u0100DH\u0100R\u0100\u1e46\u012a\u2019S R\u0100JY\u0100BHI\u1e62EKA L\u012aL\u0100 IN \u015aR\u012a V\u1e5aND\u0100VANA<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>NAVADV\u012aPA \u2013 BH\u0100V\u0100VE\u015aA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the full moon day of Bh\u0101dra in Navadv\u012bpa \u015ar\u012bman Mah\u0101prabhu performs His usual morning duties and follows the usual course of His eternal pastimes by sitting in the M\u0101dhav\u012b-pavilion of \u015ar\u012bv\u0101sa\u2019s flower garden with His devotees at noon. Knowing Mah\u0101prabhu\u2019s heart, Svar\u016bpa Gosw\u0101m\u012b sings a song about \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s coronation pastime in Vraja with a very sweet voice. Hearing this, everyone gets absorbed in Vraja-bh\u0101va and relishing the l\u012bl\u0101-rasa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>VRAJA-DH\u0100MA \u2013 R\u0100DH\u0100\u2019S ROYAL CORONATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Vraja \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101-K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a follow the usual course of Their eternal l\u012bl\u0101 by eating, resting and having Yogap\u012b\u1e6dha-meeting in Nand\u012b\u015bvara. After that K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and His friends go to tend cows in p\u016brv\u0101hna (8.24 a.m.) time, while \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 and Her sakh\u012bs return to Her parental home. Meanwhile in V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana, V\u1e5bnd\u0101-dev\u012b, on the order of \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a and \u015ar\u012b Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b dev\u012b, creates an \u0100k\u0101\u015ba-v\u0101\u1e47\u012b (ethereal message) announcing the royal coronation shower to make \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101r\u0101\u1e47\u012b the queen of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana. Along with Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b she creates an assembly of elders on the courtyard of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana\u2019s Hem\u0101mbuja Ku\u00f1ja. \u015ar\u012b Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b is the speaker of that assembly and V\u1e5bnd\u0101-dev\u012b the prast\u0101vik\u0101 (someone who puts up a candidate for election).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As She always does in Her nitya-l\u012bl\u0101, \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 goes on abhis\u0101ra at noon on the pretext of going out for S\u016brya-p\u016bj\u0101, and thus arrives on the courtyard of Hem\u0101mbuja Ku\u00f1ja. \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a also gives up herding His cows and comes there with His dearmost friends. V\u1e5bnd\u0101-dev\u012b seats everyone on appropriate seats, and the assembly can start its session. Prast\u0101vik\u0101 V\u1e5bnd\u0101-dev\u012b tells the chairwoman \u015ar\u012b Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b-dev\u012b: \u201cO Yoge\u015bvari! Crown \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 as the queen of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana, because that was clearly ordered by this disembodied ethereal voice in our presence.\u201d Then, on the beckoning of the great ascetic \u015ar\u012b Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b, five goddesses appeared \u2013 Devak\u012b\u2019s daughter Ek\u0101n\u0101\u1e41s\u0101, the resident of Vindhya, S\u016brya\u2019s wives Sa\u1e41j\u00f1\u0101 and Ch\u0101y\u0101, and S\u016brya\u2019s daughters Yamun\u0101 and M\u0101nasa Gang\u0101. S\u016brya\u2019s wife Ch\u0101y\u0101-dev\u012b said: \u201cBhagavati! We know your purpose and we will comply. But where is the greatly glorious \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 and where is the tiny kingdom of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana, measuring just 16 kro\u1e63a (32 miles)? I wish you would crown Her the queen of the whole universe!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Vindhya-v\u0101sin\u012b-dev\u012b (glancing at \u015ar\u012b Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b) said: \u201cO Tulya-r\u016bpi\u1e47\u012b sakhi! (girlfriend who is equally attractive) This V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana, measuring 16 kro\u1e63a, is extraordinary and unequalled \u2013 what is the significance of presiding over millions of universes? They dwell in a single region of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana!\u201d Hearing this, everyone bloomed up of joy. Yamun\u0101, daughter of the sun, staring at the sky, from which divine flowers were being showered, said: \u201cBhagavati! Sarasvat\u012b, daughter of Brahm\u0101, is eager to come over here, but cannot come unless you yourself call her. She is waiting in the sky with a divine basket.\u201d Then, upon being called by Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b-dev\u012b, V\u0101g Dev\u012b (Sarasvat\u012b) entered the assembly, opened the basket, and said: \u201cMother S\u0101vitr\u012b handed me this fragrant lotus-garland, Indra\u2019s wife \u015aac\u012b-dev\u012b gave me this golden lion-throne, Kuvera\u2019s wife \u1e5addh\u012b gave jewelled ornaments, Varu\u1e47a\u2019s wife Gaur\u012b gave an umbrella, Pavana\u2019s wife \u015aiv\u0101 gave two c\u0101mara-fans, Agni\u2019s wife Sv\u0101h\u0101 two garments, and Yama\u2019s wife Dh\u016bmor\u1e47\u0101 eagerly handed me this jewelled mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then a loud tumult of heavenly music began in the canopy of the sky. The Gandharvas, like Tumburu, blissfully sang in between the clouds, the Apsaras danced in the sky and well mannered beautiful goddesses blissfully began the abhi\u1e63eka-festival. \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a blissfully witnessed all this.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on Bhagavat\u012b \u015ar\u012b Paur\u1e47am\u0101s\u012b-dev\u012b\u2019s order, all world-sanctifying rivers M\u0101nasa Gang\u0101, Yamun\u0101, Sarasvat\u012b and their accompanying goddesses and girlfriends, seated \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 on the golden dais, filled jewelled jugs with the divine rasika nectar of great herbs, and bathed Her with it, thus granting Her the sovereignty over the kingdom of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana. Then the golden lion-throne which was donated by \u015aac\u012b-dev\u012b was established on the dais and \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101 took Her seat on it. Yamun\u0101 Dev\u012b then began to fan Her with a c\u0101mara, while Sarasvat\u012b Dev\u012b held an umbrella above \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s head. Lalit\u0101 and other sakh\u012bs were standing all around, engaged each in their own services while the manjar\u012bs performed \u015ar\u012bmat\u012b\u2019s mah\u0101-\u015b\u1e5b\u1e45g\u0101ra (elaborate ornamentation and make up).<\/p>\n<p>Sarasvat\u012b-dev\u012b then took the divine fragrant lotus-garland from the basket and said \u2013 \u201cMy mother S\u0101vitr\u012b affectionately sent this garland.\u201d Hearing this, Vindhya-v\u0101sin\u012b Dev\u012b took the garland and placed it around \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s neck. Seeing this, Yamun\u0101-Dev\u012b playfully smiled and said: \u201cO Devi! Why did you give this garland, that belongs to my sister \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101, to your brother (K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a being the son of Devak\u012b)?\u201d Laughing, Vindhya-v\u0101sin\u012b Dev\u012b took the divine garland plus a captivating necklace from \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s neck and placed them around \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s neck and said: \u2018Ayi! Accept Your very own garland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seeing this, Yamun\u0101 Dev\u012b said: \u2018This necklace associated with a hard heart, so we don\u2019t need it!\u201d Saying this, she laughed and in jest took the Manohara necklace from \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s neck to place it around \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s neck. Vindhya-v\u0101sin\u012b dev\u012b then took some musk from K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s chest and made tilaka of it on \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s forehead.
