Cast Your favorable glance on Your lowly maidservant!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">One may ask: \u201cSv\u0101min\u012b\u2019s compassion is unlimited, how can She stay at ease while Her maidservant suffers so much?\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The answer to this question is:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">One must experience separation in order to increase the happiness of union.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u015ar\u012bla R\u016bpa Gosv\u0101m\u012b teaches us:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">na vin\u0101 vipralambhena sambhoga pu\u1e63\u1e6dim a\u015bnute<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">k\u0101\u1e63\u0101yite hi vastr\u0101dau bh\u016byan r\u0101go vivardhate<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(Ujjvala N\u012blama\u1e47i, \u015a\u1e5b\u1e45g\u0101ra bheda)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cJust as one can remove the dirt from a cloth with alkali and thus can not only give it its original color back, but can even make its color brighter than it was before washing it, so also one cannot nourish the experience of meeting without first feeling separation.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(The word r\u0101ga means both \u2018colour\u2019 and \u2018love\u2019, Ed.)<span id=\"more-5655\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Not only that, the Gosv\u0101m\u012bs also say that the ecstasy of separation is superior to the ecstasy of meeting, and that is why there is so much separation experienced in the pure sweet pastimes of Vraja! The gop\u012bs all have mah\u0101bh\u0101va, so they are constantly feeling separation from K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, even when they are actually united with Him .<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Even the greatest saints feel themselves blessed when they can witness the gop\u012bs\u2019 love in separation. When Uddhava Mah\u0101\u015baya came to Vraja, he told the Vraja dev\u012bs: virahena mah\u0101bh\u0101g\u0101 mah\u0101n me\u2019nugraha\u1e25 k\u1e5bta\u1e25 (\u015ar\u012bmad Bh\u0101gavata 10.47.27) \u2013 \u201cYou have shown great mercy on me by exhibiting your ecstatic love in separation, O greatly fortunate girls! If you had not suffered so much out of separation, K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a would never have sent me here to console you, and I would never have been able to see your astonishing love for Him!\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Feeling great separation \u015ar\u012bpada thinks: \u201cThere is no other recourse but to take shelter of \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s most cool lotus-feet!\u201d parama \u015b\u012btala\u1e41 tavaiva pad\u0101ravindam \u0101\u015bray\u0101mi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Then a new pastime suddenly appears before \u015ar\u012bp\u0101da\u2019s love anointed eyes. He sees \u015ar\u012bmat\u012b sitting in a trystingbower, agitated by feelings of separation from K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, Who is somewhat late for His appointment. \u015ar\u012bmati embraces Her girlfriends and laments as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">bandhura l\u0101giya seja vich\u0101yalu\u1e41 g\u0101\u1e45thilu\u1e41 phulera m\u0101l\u0101<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">t\u0101mb\u016bla s\u0101jalum d\u012bpa uj\u0101ralu\u1e41 mandira hoilo \u0101l\u0101<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">soi, p\u0101che e sob hoibe \u0101n!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">se heno n\u0101gara, gu\u1e47era s\u0101gara, k\u0101he na milalo k\u0101na<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cI made the bed for My lover and strung a flower garland for Him. I prepared betel-leaves and I lit the lamps. I made the bower house very beautiful; but, O My friend, all this will turn out different\u00acly! I will not meet My hero, Who is an ocean of attributes!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u015b\u0101\u015bur\u012b nanade, v\u0101ncan\u0101 koriy\u0101, \u0101ilu\u1e41 gahana vane<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">bo\u1e0do s\u0101dha mone, e r\u016bpa yauvane, milabo bandhura sane<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">path p\u0101ne c\u0101hi, koto na rahibo, koto prabodhibo mone,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">rasa \u015biroma\u1e47i, \u0101sibo ekhoni, d\u012bna ca\u1e47\u1e0d\u012b d\u0101sa bha\u1e41e<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cI deceived My mother in law and My sister in law to come into the deep forest, and with great effort I decorated My youthful beautiful body to meet My lover. I\u2019m looking down the road for Him to come, telling My mind that this crown-jewel of relishers will certainly come now. Thus sings the wretched Ca\u1e47\u1e0d\u012b D\u0101sa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">As a maidservant, \u015ar\u012bp\u0101da pacifies virahavati, separated R\u0101dh\u0101, saying: \u201cStay calm a little! Your lover will come just now!\u201d And indeed, after a slight delay K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a arrives. Although R\u0101dhik\u0101 blooms up of joy when She sees Her lover coming, She becomes proud because of Her natural v\u0101mya svabh\u0101va (unsubmissive nature) which makes Her pull Her veil over Her face and turn Her back on Her lover. Vidagdha r\u0101ja (K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, the king of clever pranksters) tries to pacify Her by using so many clever words. Sitting at Her beautiful feet, He prays to Her with folded hands: \u201cLift Your face and look at Me, O R\u0101i! Give up Your pride and look at Me once, then the darkness in My heart will be dispelled! R\u0101i! How much more will You test Me? Take My flute if You want, as long as I can touch the dust of Your lotus-feet! You are the ointment of My eyes, that are absorbed in staring at You, and You are the thief of My heart! The creator has given You the most beautiful form, qualities and tender youthfulness in the whole world! O beautiful girl! Why should You be miserly when You possess all this wealth of beauty?\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Today the jewel of lovers is not able to soften \u015ar\u012bmat\u012b\u2019s heart. His heart is burning severely with lust as He thinks to Himself: \u201cLet Me see what happens if I touch Her beautiful feet just once?\u201d When He thinks like that, a wave of bliss flows through His heart. \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101 sits on a jewelled throne, keeping Her feet on a footstool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a tries to please Her and catches these feet to place them on His head, but at the same time \u015ar\u012bmat\u012b pulls Her feet back, so that they end up on K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s chest. \u015ar\u012bmat Kavi Kar\u1e47apura describes how beautifully \u015ar\u012bmat\u012b\u2019s footlac then shines on \u015ar\u012b K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s chest:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u015br\u012bvatsasya ca kaustubhasya ca ram\u0101 devy\u0101sya garh\u0101karo<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">r\u0101dh\u0101 p\u0101da saroja y\u0101vaka raso vak\u1e63a\u1e25-sthalastho hare\u1e25<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">b\u0101l\u0101rka dyuti ma\u1e47\u1e0dal\u012bva timirai\u015b chandena vand\u012bk\u1e5bta<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">kalindy\u0101\u1e25 payas\u012bva p\u012bba vikaca\u1e41 raktotpala\u1e41 p\u0101tu vah<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cMay the lac on R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s lotus-feet, that sticks on Hari\u2019s chest and that defeats the beauty of the \u015ar\u012bvatsa sign, the Kaustubha gem and the goddess of fortune there, that is praised by the rising sun at the end of night, and that looks like a big blossoming red lotus-flower in the water of the Yamun\u0101, protect You!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u015ar\u012b Hari has extinguished the burning fire of lust in His heart by keeping Her cool lotus-feet to it. The word madhupati in the text means \u2018relishing bee\u2019. A bee\u2019s heart is soothed by a cooling drink of honey, but this bee (Madhupati K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a) is cooling Himself off by keeping lotus flowers to His chest. These are extraordinary lotus-flowers! Normally a lusty man feels even more agitated by the fire of lust when he sees a lotus-flower, which may remind him of his beloved\u2019s feet, but K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a extinguishes the strong fire of lust in His heart with the cooling touch of \u015ar\u012b R\u0101dhik\u0101\u2019s lotus-feet, that are filled with the sweetest nectar-stream of love. Nectar is both cooling and intoxicating. The word makaranda rasa (honey juice) in the text can also indicate a love called madhu sneha, which is defined by \u015ar\u012bla R\u016bpa Gosv\u0101m\u012b in \u2018Ujjvala N\u012blama\u1e47i\u2019 as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">mad\u012byatv\u0101ti\u015baya bh\u0101k priye sneho bhaven madhu<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">svaya\u1e41 praka\u1e6da m\u0101dhuryo n\u0101n\u0101 rasa sam\u0101h\u1e5bta\u1e25<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cMadhu sneha is that kind of self-manifest sweet love that consists of different mellows and that makes the lover think \u201cK\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a is Mine!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Candr\u0101val\u012b has gh\u1e5bta sneha (love like clarified butter) and R\u0101dh\u0101 has madhu sneha (love like honey). Because R\u0101dhik\u0101\u2019s lotus-feet contain different mellows, they are called rasaugha in the text. When sneha increases in intensity it is called m\u0101na:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">snehas t\u016btk\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e6dat\u0101v\u0101ptya m\u0101dhurya\u1e41 m\u0101nayan navam<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">yo dh\u0101rayaty adak\u1e63i\u1e47ya\u1e41 sa m\u0101na iti k\u012brtyate<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(Ujjvala N\u012blama\u1e47i)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cWhen sneha increases it shows an ever fresh sweetness. It makes the beloved crooked and unsubmissive and this is called m\u0101na\u201d. Rasar\u0101ja (K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a) soothes His heart by being touched by this excellent sneha rasa. He manages to soothe R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s pique by keeping Her feet to His chest and \u015ar\u012bp\u0101da is so fortunate to relish the sweetness of Their amorous meeting. Suddenly the vision slips away from \u015ar\u012bp\u0101da, whose heart then begins to burn in the fire of separation once more. Desiring the shelter of R\u0101dh\u0101\u2019s cooling lotus-feet to extinguish that burning fire, he says: \u201cThose same cooling lotus-feet, that extinguish the fire of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a\u2019s lusty desires, are the only means to pacify the pain of separation that I feel!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">he v\u1e5bnd\u0101vane\u015bvari! hari citta manoh\u0101ri,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">nitya nava nayan\u0101bhir\u0101ma<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">he bh\u0101nu kulacanda, tomara pad\u0101ravinda,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">prem\u0101m\u1e5bta makaranda dh\u0101ma<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cO Queen of V\u1e5bnd\u0101vana! O enchanter of Hari\u2019s heart who gives ever new pleasure to the eyes! O moon of Mah\u0101r\u0101ja V\u1e5b\u1e63abh\u0101nu\u2019s dynasty!
