Salvation of the demoniac landlord
Uddanda Bhuniya, a landlord of Balia nearby Nrisinghpur, was very arrogant[1] which befitted his name. Part of the road leading from Gauda Mandala to Nilachala was within his property and he used to kill and plunder the travellers crossing it.
In 1619 Syamananda Prabhu went to Balia with Sri Rasikananda Prabhu and many other disciples. Uddanda Bhuniya could not recognize both Prabhus, and assisted by his cruel servants he attacked them. At that time a very strange and surprising thing happened. The arrows shot by the servants of Uddanda Bhuniya started boomeranging and hurting the archers themselves. Becoming frightened by this miracle, Uddanda Bhuniya surrendered at the lotus feet of Sri Syamananda Prabhu.
Never seeing others’ faults, Syamananda Prabhu was so merciful to him that even such an rude rascal turned into a great Vaisnava. Before meeting Sri Syamananda Prabhu, Uddanda Bhuniya used to kill sadhus and Vaisnavas who were passing through the road in his estate. He stored their torn clothes in a room of his palace, 718 in total, as a display of his strength. Sri Syamananda Prabhu later distributed all of them to the Vaisnavas.
[1] Uddanda means rude.
